Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo

This will be on the sleeper hits of the year. An incredible top-down Zelda game that feels great to play, has great music, and charming writing. You owe it to yourself to get Pipistrello-pilled.

Avowed (I played like 5 hours until I dropped it)

Awful game. I thought Obsidian making an Elder Scrolls game would be a slam dunk, but they created a world that has 0 simulation layers that make the ES games feel so alive. The straw that broke it for me was the insane upgrade system for weapons.

South of Midnight

This game goes to show that you can hide a really bad gameplay loop as long as you have a really solid style, good music, and keep it under 10 hours. I'll probably forget most of this game in a month but I enjoyed it while I played it.

Of course the one month I decide to give gamepass a shot, microsofts servers explode and prevent me from playing south of midnight.

Did you know 30% of microsofts code is written by AI btw.

Halfway through the year so here's some stuff I've been listening to, new releases on the top and older stuff at the bottom

Enjoying South of Midnight more than I expected. It’s got some VERY glaring issues but the rest of the game is good enough for me to laugh them off

The environmental storytelling in the 2016 and Eternal are so good, I have no idea why they cared so much about expanding on it.

So many levels in this game are big open world-ish areas with 3 objectives on all ends of the map, and every combat area is a flat plane. They’re just not fun to traverse through. The guns are ok but the upgrades you get are so bad that I just stuck with one gun in the back half.

Doom: The Dark Ages

After about 2 hours in, this game pretty much confirmed every fear I had about it. There’s too much story (especially for a fucking prequel!) and the new gameplay loop with the parries is so mind numbing. I have a lot more to say about it but it’s a big disappointment for me.

Spilled!

Very cute indie game about cleaning up a river. It’s 6 bucks and takes about an hour to beat. Amazing artwork as well.

I loved pirate yakuza so much. First yakuza game in a while where I got the platinum trophy

The one good part about missing combo breaker is that I don't feel stressed to practice multiple games leading up to it. Going to start doom the dark ages tonight.

Rift of the NecroDancer

Very glad they ditched the rougelite stuff and focused on making one of the most interesting rhythm games I've played. It's hard as hell but really fun to learn. There's also a really cute story mode with Rhythmheaven minigames.

Burnout Paradise Remastered

First time getting the burnout license and beating the game. I think I never did it before because the difficulty spike for the final license is kind of insane. Still very fun, they don't make em like this anymore.

We talked about it on big think dimension but I don't think anything better illustrates how off-the-wagon graphics engineers have gotten this gen than this.

PS4 game on PS5 looking sharper and cleaner than the PS5 version running on the 800 dollar PS5 Pro

Belichick ending his professional career with an incredibly dysfunctional chapter at UNC because he’s getting Cyclone 3000 Horse Power Wash sloppy toppy is both respectable and relatable.
