what kind of table engine where you using where you couldn't do the deduplication at query time? If you were using ReplacingMergeTree you can do for instance `ORDER BY LIMIT BY` instead of final.
If you say „not return duplicate rows“ do you run with FINAL or do you deduplicate in your query? Cause deduplicating in the query is very fast and I never had a speed issue
