Western bluebird perched on a tree branch in the shade, boosting morale with its sweet face
Bluebird posting will continue until morale improves
Red-tailed hawk (possibly juvenile) perched on top of a light.
For #birdoftheday #manmadeperch, here is an incredible (juvenile?) red-tailed hawk, perched on a light in the parking lot of my local Costco a couple weeks ago. The store had just opened, so there weren't a lot of cars yet, and there were some songbirds attracting his attention.
Thank you!
Thank you!

Spotted Towhee perched on a wooden beam, with a red eye looking out.
For #birdoftheday #blackheads, here is a Spotted Towhee briefly perched out in the open at Descanso Gardens. The eyes are so striking!
2 acorn woodpeckers perched on the edge of a pipe
For #birdoftheday #black&red, here are 2 acorn woodpeckers perched on a pipe in the bright morning sun. It looks like they are sipping water that pooled on the surface of the pipe.
Thank you!
Two Scaly-breasted Munia eating and perching on a reed.
For #birdoftheday #snacks, here are two Scaly-breasted Munia enjoying a snack on a precarious perch at the LA Arboretum. These birds are so light, they barely swayed this reed.
Owlet leaning on Great Horned Owl mom.
The Great Horned Owls at Descanso Gardens have 2 owlets! I was lucky enough to see them when mom was feeding the owlets. Hard to get a good photo, but I thought this looked sweet (the second owlet is hiding behind mom).
Thank you!
Northern Flicker standing in the grass
For #birdoftheday #grounded, here is a lovely Northern Flicker I saw at the LA Arboretum this past weekend.
Thank you!
American robin standing in the grass
I saw an American robin this morning, looking magnificent in a sunny spot on the grass. True to the song, he was hoppin' and boppin' quite a bit, but I caught a rare quiet moment.
California scrub jay standing on the ground in a dramatic pose, with a cascade of white feathers from below its beak onto its chest, like a beard
For #birdoftheday, here is a California scrub jay striking a pose, showing off its "beard." It gathered more nest materials this past weekend, and I'm keeping an eye on the nest for any developments!
Baby hummingbird perched in the nest, flapping its wings before fledging
I had the joy of watching a baby hummingbird fledge this morning! Here he is working his wings just before takeoff!
California scrub jay perched on a branch with a whole peanut in its beak
Happy #ThursJay! Here's a California scrub jay with big plans
White-crowned sparrow perched in a flowering crabapple tree
I saw a couple white-crowned sparrows in a crabapple tree this morning, and I managed to get a photo of one. The sparrows seem to love these beautiful trees as much as I do!
California scrub jay with a thin white line of feathers above its eye, holding a twig in its beak
Out for a walk this morning, I spotted a California scrub jay picking out nesting material. I love their "eyebrows"!
Thanks for sharing this! I enjoyed the chat with everyone today, thanks for putting it together!
Catching up on some reading this week. I enjoyed this one, especially the usual Gibbons touch of humor.
Brookner #12 for me. It treads familiar Brookner ground in its focus on a woman who devotes herself entirely to her mother, consequently sacrificing her own happiness. I really enjoyed it.
