A maternity ward doctor donated his own blood during surgery to keep a pregnant patient alive.
One woman gained fewer than 10 pounds over her entire pregnancy.
Another collapsed and had seizures during labor.

Earlier this year, Dr. Jane Goodall sat down for an interview for Brad Falchuk’s new Netflix series, Famous Last Words.
The premise of the series is to interview people on the condition that the interview not air until the subject has passed away.
Looking forward to hosting this event with Asha Rangappa on Thursday night! Follow the link to join us!
Outstanding commentary by Timothy Snyder, once again, on how to get from war to peace. snyder.substack.com/p/the-logic-...
New Column: "Who elected you?" is an old punch line. This time, it's not a joke. Nightmare. newrepublic.com/article/1910... via @newrepublic.com
You're not letting anyone down. You are rightly and courageously choosing what seems best for your own well being in a time of great uncertainty. All the very best to you as you continue moving forward in every good work.
It certainly shouldn't work that way, but they will want everyone to say thank you for the HIV/AIDS reprieve.
This allows them to claim credit for any good work that they allow to move forward.
I agree with you Mark. I see two *real* things he is trying to do in the midst of the confusion he is creating:
1. Consolidate power by getting his cabinet nominations approved.
2. Destroy any Obama/Biden legacy by freezing funding, then claim credit for any work that he allows to move forward.
The last season of House of Cards wasn't very good, but at least we know what to expect. en.protothema.gr/2025/01/28/m...
Refugee resettlement agencies are now trying to maintain their legal, professional, and humanitarian commitments, even if the Trump administration feels no such obligation. Help them if you can, and if you voted for this president, tell him this is not the America you hoped to see.
Three months of support for resettled refugees is painfully inadequate, but the new administration has chosen to cut that off, even for those who have already arrived and are barely settled. www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-a...
Thanks @sifill.bsky.social. I needed this one.
Yes. Really painful to see what has happened — and is happening — to all of our friends there. Personally, I am really happy to have landed in a great place, but I grieve at the continuing drip, drip of news from SNC.
Good to connect here, Chef Dan!
On this national day of mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, this remembrance captures both his respect for others and his hopefulness for peace.

Lots of op-eds honoring recounting Jimmy Carter's contributions today, and appropriately so. This piece from Samantha Power recalls his support for human rights, which affected both rhetoric and practice in the US and beyond. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/30/o...
If you're dispirited by the state of the US or the world, here's my annual giving guide with nonprofits that change the world. One restores lives of women with fistula. One saves children's lives. And one works here in the US to help kids learn to read. Please share! www.nytimes.com/2024/11/23/o...
The most predictable thing about Trump is that he is 100% transactional
Last year, when I was at MSNBC, I did a 10-minute deep-dive into RFK Jr's anti-vaxxer role in the measles outbreak that killed dozens and dozens of kids in Samoa.
I hope every Senator voting in his confirmation process for HHS knows about this crucial and awful story:
Excellent thread here — worth heeding!
This UN report looks at the impact of digital technologies more broadly (see esp. Sec III), and it is already a bit dated, given the fast pace of development, but perhaps its examples of discriminatory impact, predictive policing, etc will give you something to work with. Please share your findings!
