I had my first Hotmail address back in 1997, but I didn’t personally use email on my PDA as (even *with* spam) I’d only send/receive a handful of messages a month.

I remember using it to sign-up for free stuff like mp3.com’s CD samplers in the mail (even with intl postage!)

PDAs back then didn’t have Wi-Fi (let alone mobile-data); instead you’d use the AvantGo service, which saved website snapshots to your PDA every time you ran ActiveSync.

(Not to be confused with Exchange ActiveSync, which is a tangential relation)

Best? Nah; it was one of my earliest cases of Buyer’s Remorse. The Compaq H3630 was far, far better (the HP 545 had a passive-matrix LCD, weak backlight, and slower SH3 chip). The Compaq was only £50 more expensive but I was too impatient to wait-and-save more.

When I was 12 I saved up all the money from grandparent visits and bought myself (via my dad) a HP Jornada 545 running Windows PocketPC with a CompactFlash card for MP3 storage.

Granted, I had to use 16kbps mono MP3 - but I was ahead of the curve :3

I can think of a few other big and bulky things too
