A poem by Carmien Michels — The Dial "The Tavistock"

www.thedial.world/articles/lit... I was approached by The Dial for recent translation work and this is what they picked - one of my favourites from Carmien Michels' collection We've Come A Long Way, recently published by Copper Coin.

The thing that depresses me in the whole AI revolution in my industry (I’m a literary translator and publisher) is that the question is not whether machines can replace human translators, but how will we deal with the fallout after machines are forcibly introduced regardless.

Yes, it's with beautiful woodcuts and a nature theme, though closer to The Starling's Song, so more aimed at children.

So glad you liked This Will Last Forever! I've just translated Octavie's latest, You Are My Beginning for @pushkinpress.com Not sure of pub date yet.

To say that AIs can replace human translators is to say that AI can replace human painters and sculptors and singers and poets. It's to assume that AIs as they are currently made and will be made for the foreseeable future can surpass humans in those things which require a soul.

Translators work hard to make sure that the translated words, sentences, paragraphs, chapters, etc, not only convey the author's meaning, but also the author's *style.*

Translators are alchemists. They are artists, and poets, and researchers, and editors. They are magicians and wizards.

I'm not so sure, living in the Netherlands means my English gets rusty and contaminated by Dutchisms.

I think translating between two languages in the same family is probably easier but there's more chance of interference, so that gap is maybe also helpful sometimes?
