Research in the wild: Why I'm doing this.
A bit of a reflection on why I'm writing my submission to "AI and Ethics" in the open, to the extent that I am writing it in the open #PhilSky

Epistemic tomfoolery
Don’t write “writ large.” Rather, just write whatever you’re saying is “writ large” in a larger font.
You’re welcome.

Bespoke: Order by ORCID
I hate this kind of social media content.
But here’s the kicker: everybody does it.
And here’s what they’re not telling you: it’s easier to produce than you think.
"DC received a clear message that being anti-crypto is a good way to end your career, as it doesn't represent the will of the voters," Coinbase chief executive Brian Armstrong, a key Fairshake donor, wrote following Brown's defeat.
Being critical of AI "is about the best fight you can politically take on right now," said Cooper Teboe, a strategist for congressman Ro Khanna, who recently called for "enforceable guardrails" for AL. Those afraid their stance will prompt an industry-led backlash may be shortsighted, Teboe added. "I do think the next three presidential elections will be fought over trying to figure out [AI]."
There is a lot going on in this short article giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...
Spaceman world, caveman problems
I thought Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Arabic mathematics. These might be more historical than region-specific, though.
In this week’s #TechFutures article, I point to the tension between AI generally being valuable to science, and LLMs in particular bringing about deep problems for knowledge systems such as @wikipedia.org.
Short read, as always!

I don’t think I follow, even after seeing the LGBTESCREAL starter pack. Here’s the paper on the TESCREAL bundle: firstmonday.org/ojs/index.ph...
There is a powerful pressure among academic philosophers nowadays to take seriously claims of artificial general intelligence or AI sentience. Serious engagement with such propositions requires many layers of intellectual dishonesty combined with a willingness to watch the world burn.
Research in the wild: hitting a wall. And getting unstuck by writing about hitting a wall.
I hit an epistemic wall but overcame it epistemically. I’m basically going to draw on the #TESCREAL bundle as I get into the next stage of writing. open.substack.com/pub/ismaelkh...
Justice for Palestine: stop EU trade with criminals
Around 900k signatures out of the one million needed. Fellow Europeans, please sign this European Citizens’ initiative to demand the full suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement in view of Israel’s violations of human rights.

Who are the experts / journalists / researchers you turn to for critical perspectives on AI & the tech world? I created a feed of experts who watch AI developments with a skeptical & critical (but *informed*) POV. I'd love more people to follow it, but I'm also looking to add people - recs welcome!
Ooo! I’m not sure how to see who’s listed but I’d like to recommend @mtlaiethics.bsky.social and @weandai.bsky.social if they’re not there already!
I got a bit sidetracked as I wrote today. Genuine question #PhilSky open.substack.com/pub/ismaelkh...

Absolutely enthralled by the exciting twists and turns in this book, I had to look up the lead author, who was pretty awesome: www.nature.com/articles/s43...

all these universities kept axing medieval history departments as if they thought tyrants beefing with the Pope was going to stop being relevant
Grappling with Gramsci possibly writing in too dark a period for me to speak of “AI subalterns” but AI warfare makes me feel less uneasy about my choice #PhilSky open.substack.com/pub/ismaelkh...

Looking at this list and thinking “huh, nothing was edible according to English speakers until 1594.”
Am I doing etymology right?

Research in the Wild: Subalternity in AI What if we had a name?
Here goes – my first meeting with #Gramsci (it's been a long time coming). First formulation of the "AI subaltern" for my paper, which I am writing openly because that's totally a thing #PhilSky #AI
