I am thrilled to announce that I will begin my PhD at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto this week. I’ll be building on my previous work in AI governance while expanding my focus to trace and explore the broader landscape of technology policy challenges in Canada ☀️

I haven’t done sufficient research on that front to answer that confidently, but I will say is that these type of patterns can be detected and there should be more coordination work between stakeholders to 1) identify it 2) address it properly, which is currently not happening.

and it often goes back to having adequate facilitation, having a deep respect and understanding of the role of ground rules + what prevents people from participating in them (e.g work, familial commitments, health, etc)

2) social media platforms should all have dedicated fact-checkers (people not just automated tools) that can immediately label content images uploaded. these efforts can be led through a regulatory body that supports standards making processes for interoperability

There are many things that need to be done, which require both technical and non-technical interventions. 1) At a technical level, companies providing AI tools that generate content should develop watermarks (visible and invisible),

NEW RESEARCH ALERT 🚨

We conducted a survey experiment to see if labelling AI generated content can affect people’s behaviour. We found that current labelling approaches by social media platforms don’t work. More effective methods must be implemented to help improve trust and transparency online.

As someone who has reported on AI for 7 years and covered China tech as well, I think the biggest lesson to be drawn from DeepSeek is the huge cracks it illustrates with the current dominant paradigm of AI development. A long thread. 1/

'Astronomical' hold queues on year's top e-books frustrate readers, libraries | CBC News More than 1,000 people are waiting to borrow the Ottawa Public Library's most popular e-book of 2024, and librarians say inflated prices and restrictive e-book publishing practices are responsible.

Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, Macmillan Publishers, Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster "throttle" access to e-books by selling them to libraries for either a limited time or a limited number of circulations — sometimes both.

An algorithm was supposed to fix Canada’s food safety system. Instead, it missed a deadly listeria outbreak Five years ago, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency began letting manufacturers increasingly police themselves under a new system of oversight. Now three people are dead and many more have been harmed...

"Under the old system, an inspector could use discretion on which plants needed more attention [...] 'The problem with the current system where everything is totally algorithm-based is it doesn’t allow for inspector judgment'”
