and a peek at :json: protocol, where we might get multiple fields, for use in making a lightbox or a lens (or just thumbnails alongside a menu....)
that's all for now, except to say "look, a link does not have to be this fixed thing that just goes to one place.. we've been doing that 35 years!"
Posts by Daniel Smith
coming in alap 3.2, I wrote a tutorial that walks through how to write a protocol (reaching out to a data source that can at least give an array of labels and links). This one is :hn: (Hackernews)
alap doing async dynamic menu loading
this is some :atproto:
Looking for additional web dev work
I would like to get 10 or more hours a week of a gig where I can:
* leverage my decades of web experience + AI, to bring ideas to life
* help refactor old projects, etc
See github.com/DanielSmith and alap.info
(and yes, I rewrote grabchars recently, as well)
.. but, to be honest, I may stop at 3.2.. I've thought on it for ~30 years, and did a first version in 2012. What I have now is pretty much what I always wanted. But zero feedback? I know I should not care, but damn, I've written a whole platform - I suppose it's not explained or presented right.
live #atproto example. You can log into bluesky, and do searches, and those can become dynamic menus
I should mention that alap.info leads to repo, with docs and examples
Yes, I need to make some videos, but the gist is: I devised an expressive little language, to attach menus to plain old anchor tags. And no I dont mean local nav menus...
snapshot of conversions that I am writing to get data into an obsidian vault, so that alap can query obsidian, as part of a dynamic menu supported types are: plain markdown files, and: Known plugins: `hugo`, `jekyll`, `mkdocs`, `docusaurus`. Unknown names warn and are dropped. also, rss feeds
I am working away at alap 3.2, which will support local obsidian vaults...
but also, one needs to get data into a vault in the first place :)
so, alap 3.1 handles some #atproto and can call into json apis (and can use this to make a menu, a lightbox, or a lens)
and obsidian is next
if I could clone myself, I'd spend time on a Vax 11/750 running BSD Unix 4.x. But I know myself and that it would be rabbit hole π°
My new name for LinkedIn is "Bad Takes as a Disservice".
Am looking for recs on SF Bay / West Coast Slacks / Discords for creative / techy folks.

We just flew 1/4 million miles, can we get out now please? ππ§βπ
#artemis
For 35 years, we've put up with the idea that a link can only go to one target, and that menus were just some sort of local navigation thing...
alap gives you choice. Links with menus
alap.info
it is a go pro on one of the solar wings
is funny how they did the improv "t shirt shroud" for #artemis
for the next mission they will give it some official name...
"artemis, adjust the FLD at window 2 orientation"
"understood, Houston, tweaking Fabric Light Diffuser"
wondering about #artemis videography.. didnt they take a lunar telescope to continuously video record? Seems a long way to go, just to rely on a few Nikons (w/400mm lens) and a few SD cards... I mean, we'll get great images, but I would think they would be recording terabytes of telescope (?)
"we would be honored if you would join us"
I just love all the planning that goes into #artemis and yet, "T-shirt shroud" π· π
go artemis go!
My new post on Medium about alap
gist is: we have had 35 years of static links, one target. I think we can improve on that, and do so in an open format.
...and we can dynamically call @atproto.com endpoints, while we're at it.

a sample alap menu, launched from an ordinary HTML link, and it is ARIA compliant
sample of alap expressions we have plain ids, .tags, @macros, :protocols: such as web and atproto, and *refiners* - all with parentheses grouping

I've been hinting about a project for a while...
Web Links should offer choice, when it makes sense.
beta + web site to check out
simple expression lang, tons of examples
yes, we can make dynamic menus that include #Atproto data

something I have been thinking about for 30 years
The Scene: Open with 1992. The terminal is black, the text is green (or amber), and you are navigating the web using the Lynx browser....
this article is where I was, 5 years ago... a proof of concept, and a couple of editors. I recently took the idea off the shelf, and dusted it off.
I cant wait to show you what I just did this month.. complete rewrite...

am releasing a beta soon.... this idea about the web that a link only goes to one place, well.. it's always bugged me, for ~30 years β³
so I did something about it, and could use a few eyes to take an early look, ping me π
(yep I did a complete rewrite of one my old ideas) πΈοΈ
it's custom. Can match by prefix, fuzzy, or contains :)
grabchars 2.1 β my CLI keystroke utility, rewritten in Rust. One tool for y/n prompts, filtered input, masked fields, selection menus, timeouts with defaults.
New in 2.1: JSON output, fuzzy filtering, ESC handling.
