Disappointed, though not surprised, I began to describe various life- saving components of USAID’s global health portfolio, highlighting how we prepare for and respond to emerging pandemic threats; support the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV; and immunize millions of children from the deadliest childhood diseases. I spoke for about five minutes, focusing primarily on our infectious diseases work and hoping to keep the attention of people who seemed to have no experience—or interest—in global health.

When I finished, the room was silent, the political appointees looking at one another in what appeared to be disbelief. The silence was broken by Ken Jackson, who chuckled softly and shook his head. “Wow, there really is so much that USAID does that we never knew,” he said. “This is the story that needs to get out there.”

Joel, also smiling, chimed in next, echoing Jackson’s amazement. “I had no idea you did all this,” he said. “As a Republican, when I think of what USAID does in global health, I assumed it was just, you know, abortions.”

totally. I just still remember Wietse's talk at BSDCan[1] and was taken back by his approach to software development; tl;dr he grew up developing on timeshare systems so you quickly learned not to break shit.

I fucking despise LinkedIn so I'm just gonna say it here.

I left Oracle last month. Took a few weeks off. Interviewed with some really great people doing genuinely interesting work. Received some offers and made a difficult decision.

I'm starting at Nscale next week as an o11y engineer. 🎉📈🧠

PDX folks, is there a bike shop here that sells used/refurbished bikes and/or accepts trade-ins? Or an event where such a thing might happen? It feels like something this town should have but my search efforts aren’t turning up anything yet.

Surly Karate Monkey frame and fork on a table for sale at a bike show.

Went to my first bike swap show this morning. Big east coast event that happens to take place about 5 miles from our house.

Had a great time even though I didn't bring anything home. Was seriously considering this Surly "brass monkey" Karate Monkey but decided to keep my Sklar Tall Tale instead.

I do not fear the rise of superintelligence.

I do, however, fear the rise of billionaires, organizations, and world powers who seek to use computing to maximize their power, influence, and control.

I figured it was a long shot at best. Regardless, I'm pretty excited; the show is literally 5mi from our house yet it's my first opportunity to attend.

@fitzwaterphoto.bsky.social any chance you're going to the bike swap show in MD this weekend? Guessing not but couldn't hurt to ask.

Pour one out for Heroku. Working there (even post-acquisition) was probably the single most influential experience of my career. I miss all of my Heroku Ops teammates like none other, even to this day.

Our refund arrived this morning, with interest. Probably to distract us from the Epstein files.

Wellness exam. ✅

Lost 75lbs, cholesterol numbers all green (or trending green), and blood pressure dropped from stage 1 hypertension (138/82) to normal (116/68).

Over the past year I've been doing CICO (6 week diet + 3 week maintenance cycles), 3/week strength training, and walking (7k steps). 💪

And now comes the most nauseating part of this whole goddamn mess: the hypocrisy. The same loud-mouthed idiots who spent years screaming about tyranny are suddenly dead fucking silent, or worse, cheering, now that it's their side doing it. "ThEy'Re cOminG fOr OuR gUnS!" "GoVerNMenT oVerReAch!" "ShAll nOt bE inFrinGeD!" All that chest-thumping bullshit evaporated the second armed federal agents started terrorizing people they don't like.
Let me get this straight: a civilian gets shot dead by federal agents, and the only thing you brainless cunts can muster is
"well, DHS says he had a gun"? THAT'S your red line? Guns are sacred when they're strapped to your waist, but magically become a death sentence when they're used as a post-hoc excuse by the government? Either the Second Amendment applies to everyone, or you never believed in it at all. Fucking pick one and own it.
This is exactly what tyranny looks like, by the way. Not jackboots marching in formation, but armed agents roaming neighborhoods, stopping people, killing civilians, and then daring the public to question it. Tyranny is execution followed by a press release. Tyranny is labeling the dead a "threat" so the state doesn't have to explain why someone's life just ended in the street. Tyranny is demanding obedience while shredding due process and calling it order.
And all you so-called "freedom lovers" are fucking fine with it, as long as it's brown people, immigrants, protesters, or anyone you've already dehumanized. Turns out "don't tread on me" actually meant "tread on them." You weren't afraid of tyranny.
You were afraid of losing dominance. There's a difference, and this moment exposes it completely.
"Just comply" isn't a principle. It's cowardice dressed up as common sense. It's the language of people who have already accepted that the state gets to decide who deserves rights and who doesn't. And once you make that deal, don't act shocked when the line moves, because it always fuckin…

I'm so exhausted saying this, but it doesn't matter how batshit insane Trump is if he has Congress and media fully enabling his psychopathic instincts. Stop blaming the toddler running around with a flamethrower.

Our CPA _is_ able to talk to _someone_ at the IRS but all they've communicated is that they are holding the return indefinitely. It's been one 60 (or 90) -day hold period after another. There's nothing we can do. No signal of an audit. Just that they're holding it without cause.

This is your quarterly reminder that our 2024 tax refund, filed before the April 2025 deadline, still has not been approved or processed by the IRS. We have no way to talk to an actual human being at the IRS. They're illegally holding our money and we have no recourse.

I think it's wild that conservatives came up with a detached pejorative for "being a decent human being" to try to avoid telling on themselves.

They think it works so well that they can call feeding hungry children "woke" and it's a sick burn that will make senpai notice them in the comments.
