19 years ago today, Nine Inch Nails released "Beside You in Time," their third concert film release, directed and art directed by me. Showcasing the 2005-2006 "Live: With Teeth" tours, it was one of the first concert films released on then-new high definition Blu-ray and HD DVD (RIP) formats. 🧵
Catching video feedback spirits with VJ Burle Avant and the Eternal Reseach team, with their Demon Box instrument, Burle’s impressive modular rig, and my circuit-bent Cybershot. It was cool to meet Burle, who was the VJ for MTV’s iconic late-90s dance/electronic show AMP (hence the music). 1/

Yeah, pretty much, just in this case each layer is basically the same image but each one glitched in different ways, so I paint on the masks to reveal parts of the layers above and create a blend. That way I have more control, I don't have to rely on one glitch pass being exactly right.

In this case the pixel smearing is coming from a circuit-bent camera that is exceptional at that particular texture. For standard pixel sorting stuff I use apps, I'll usually generate a bunch of variations in a few apps and then layer them in PS and blend the best bits together in various ways.

The effect of the pixel grid and the harsh black-and-white static on the band members stuck with us, and we turned it into the production design for the song "Only" on the Live: With Teeth 2005 arena tour, and many tours beyond it.

Up close, when projecting pure white, you could see the fine grid of the pixel matrix (see the texture on the skin in these close-up portraits of the band members). Terrible for professional projection quality, but great for the With Teeth aesthetic! 4/

This was a sort of test shoot tacked on to the end of our main photo shoot, so I just brought a cheap portable consumer projector. It was a bit underpowered for a professional band shoot, but we discovered that the cheap lower-resolution quality had an unintended bonus... 3/

At the shoot, I had the projector taking input directly from my laptop so I could use my tablet to draw directly on the projected image and "scratch out" the faces of the band members. 2/
