Google Search is now using AI to replace headlines Let us know if you see more.

I appreciate @seanhollister.bsky.social 's reporting here about the latest step Google is taking in their quest to destroy the information ecosystem and disempower information seekers:

Aesthetics Map

I scraped the aesthetics wiki and vibecoded all 1,031 pages into an interactive map of internet culture aesthetics.

- aesthetics articles linked to other articles from links in their infobox
- positions are determined by a combination of edge and text similarity

We should view Social Media as a systemic issue instead of a symptomatic one and tackle its root:

Overcoming the commercial and exploitative logic we applied to digitalization so far.

Making social media better and safer for eyeryone will be more sustainable for young people AND for democracy.

X-Beiträge, zunächst von Maximilian Krah, darunter von Elon Musk.

Maximilian Krah:

Der Kommentar von Rabbit Hole: "Grok correctly acknowledges Affirmative Action as being racist while ChatGPT does not." Der Kommentar zu diesem Kommentar von Elon Musk: Elon Musk @elonmusk vor 14 Std. "The only AI with truth as the fundamental goal is
@Grok from @xAI"

Nationalistischer, rassistischer Schund.

The eureka fallacy of optimization When we learn things by studying or doing research, we perceive understanding as coming to us in step-like a-ha moments.1 I will argue that these moments happen more likely when we recognize (or ma…

Blog time! 📯

We feel that we understand things when certain patterns of explanations are in place. If reality doesn't follow those patterns, our understanding suffers. On to the third such eureka fallacy I've blogged about: explanation by optimization.

A figure from my university's computer security information for employees.

Just in general . . I think humans absolutely adore symmetry and instinctively ignore asymmetric theories/observations to the point that if you see someone presenting something asymmetric, you can assume they actually have some evidence.

Here it is, the most damning academic figure in the history of all figures: Russian IRA accounts deeply embedded in both sides of the 2016 Twitter BLM "discussion" (by @katestarbird.bsky.social & team, 2018).

THIS is what our information ecosystem supports. Twitter just made it 1% more visible.

I can understand that sentiment a lot. But I also know the other side, and I know how insanely frustrating and difficult to prevent such things can be. I’m not trying to sugarcoat the insane data breach, just acknowledge that they must’ve had a bad morning asking why they didn’t see it earlier.

Frontiers | A Statistical Explanation of the Dunning–Kruger Effect An explanation of the Dunning-Kruger effect is provided whichdoes not require any psychological explanation, because it is derived as astatistical artefact. ...

Research reveals the link between language and lawmaking New research from Linköping University shows that words in the U.S. Congress don’t just reflect politics – they predict it. Hendrik Erz reveals how speech and voting together shape American democracy.

Issues | The Quarterly Journal of Economics | Oxford Academic The official journal of the President and Fellows of Harvard University. The oldest professional journal of economics in the English language, it covers all aspects of the field.

Here's your periodic reminder that much of what appears in mainstream econ journals has large overlaps with other social science fields. E.g., at least 6/15 papers in this top tier journal could probably be published in sociology journals too: academic.oup.com/qje/issue/?n...

... to me analytical sociology is an attempt of making sociology more rigor by connecting it to the natural sciences. The origin of the confusion around what AS is comes from the realization that there might be reasons why sociology is no natural science and one ends up doing "just sociology" :)
