Sadie do you have any favourite destinations and why?

I love to travel, so my favourite destination is always the next place we are hoping to explore. But I should take the time to appreciate the Lothians (in Scotland, home for the last thirty years) properly rather than taking them for granted. Tourists know more about our neighbourhood than we do. The beauty of our coastline takes my breath away. We live next door to a battlefield, up the road from a hillfort on a volcanic plug. It's amazing.

Today's screenshot from @acidbathpublishing.bsky.social over on t'Insta. They are a lovely lot, I wish I had more interesting things to tell them. Oh, another destination I like is Screaming Heads in Ontario. If you go, take bug spray. And possibly holy water. #ShortStories #Fiction #BookSky 📚 💙

The stories could have been written anywhere. They are snapshots, maybe melancholy or silly or grotesque, but never cruel. So I hope readers appreciate them even if they aren't familiar with cruises. Or even if they do know cruises, of course. If there is an overarching theme it would be ... life is messy. There are extraordinary stories inside ordinary people. But not every story has a resolution.

Sadie, what is it about cruises and the stories they carry that interest you?

7. They are such a marmite thing. Big ships layered like human lasagne. Ocean holiday camps. Yet there is still something oldfashioned and glamorous about the idea, especially on a smaller ship, where some regulars remember the glory days of black tie and tails. So there is a tension between past and present, the reality and the dream - jolly holidaying for guests contrasting with the underlying (often invisible) hard work of staff a long way from home. I asked one guy cleaning stairs if he was ok, and he answered 'I am sad, lonely and very tired, madam'. I remember his face and name but not those of any of the passengers from that trip. Am I a bad person? A hypocrite. I still fancy another cruise. Whether I would write another book about it I don't know.

Thankful for this tiny clump of Bluebells, flowering at the base of a venerable senior Ash tree. Possibly a very old hedge bank?

They sensibly cut down this rant -

After lockdown I was in an odd place mentally, like many people. I was fortunate enough to be able to take a cheap (-ish) cruise for nearly a month. I liked the idea of resetting myself in a new environment. A writing retreat was another option, but that would have involved compulsory social interaction and no breakfast buffets. In an ideal world, all ships and planes would be ecologically zero impact, and tourism would only enhance communities. I can't argue that cruises are a good thing. But for some people they are a way of life, by choice or necessity. For me, for a while, that ship was a haven.

It was a privilege to travel alone, safely, in a little cabin, where I opened the door to either the ocean or a new place to explore every day. Most of the people I met, on board and on land, were lovely. Some were tosspots. I intended to write poetry and learn to draw. I also had the idea that I would teach myself to raise one eyebrow. I still can't draw, or raise one eyebrow, but I did write a lot of poetry. That gave me the confidence to try longer pieces of writing. To be quite clear, no real life people were turned into story characters. But elements of personality, speech patterns and general tosspotteriness were so interesting that I couldn't help creating tiny scenarios in my head as I wandered the decks. Some of the elements are autobiographical. One of the copy editors noted that they found certain characters unlikeable. I had to agree. It just happened to be the ones based on me. If I seem unkind in my observations, it's against myself as well. I would say in the main I am less homicidal than some of the protagonists.

3. My favourite genre to write is kitchen sink with a vague supernatural tint. I wish I had the brain to write murder mysteries. Maybe I shall go on another long cruise and set myself the task of writing an Agatha Christie style novel. It'll probably end up with a ghost in it, though.

Sadie what's your favourite genre to read and what's your favourite book.

Favourite books depend on mood, season and state of the world. At the moment I am reading Martha Wells for fantasy/sci fi and Tom Cox for folk weirdness. Any genre is great if it gives its writers and readers joy. I'll happily read anything from Shakespeare to Terry Pratchett, but I do like a 1930s murder mystery, for the escape to another time and satisfying puzzle-solving.

The original text sent "1. We have two cats at the moment. There is also a very cute foster who is an absolute floof. Unfortunately he has to be an indoor cat and he craps like a rhino, which is not ideal. Our black cat is a tiny puma. When we arrived we were trying out lots of names like Bastet, Bane, Ares or Azrael, as befitting a prince of the void. But then the kids suggested Pickle, so we went with that. Mimi, the matriarch cat, views Pickle and the universe with contempt. There have been other cats over the years, all of whom were the best cats. We love all animals, but prefer the earned approval of a cat to the unconditional adoration of a dog."
