After 10 years of not finding a Chinese reading comprehension app that matched my learning style, I made my own. It helps you with pinyin but just for the Hanzi characters you don’t know. It’s free so give it a try! apps.apple.com/se/app/hanzi...

Why don't they build anything here? Are they stupid?
So SCOTUS, with its fabricated-out-of-thin-air immunity doctrine, has actually made American presidents less accountable than LITERAL royalty.
When you have a rules-based order where you carve out exceptions to our values, eventually the exceptions become the rules.
fuck yes
Watch this, it's astonishing.
“Power that rests on the performed compliance of others is more fragile than it looks. The strong do what they can, until the moment they discover that “what they can” was always bounded by what others were willing to tolerate.”
If you have read even a single history of fascism, you are already aware that one thing that its rise has in common in every case is an opposition party that refuses to intervene for fear of looking weak or putting the left into power
And there it is, the clearest articulation yet that we are living in momentous times.
Hungary and Czech Republic choose not to back Denmark. I hope they're not not looking for anyone to back them in in future. EU doesn't have the mechanisms but should suspend these two states from EU, meanwhile carry on dealing with Trump's absurd megolamania without them.
Exactly this. In fact, with the argument that Denmark is too small to protect Greenland against China or Russia and that is why the U.S. needs to annex the Island, Trump just told everyone openly that he would not defend Denmark (and other NATO partners) unless the relevant country is U.S. property.
Because it's not really about that at all.
If that is indeed where they are going…
They did a whole OLC memo for Obama parsing this out and concluding the Nobel committee is independent enough to not count as a "foreign state" for the foreign emoluments clause.
We're so used to using terms like "crazy" and "insane" as terms of political abuse in a more metaphorical sense, I find myself coming back to "non compos mentis." He's literally not mentally competent, delusional and erratic to the point of being incapacitated under any reasonable standard.
Did not know the end of the American century would be so farcical.
I think this is exactly right.
www.ft.com/content/2642... Europe must not appease Trump on Greenland
The incredibly lukewarm Democratic response on Greenland is being noticed in Europe, incidentally.
Chuck Schumer not finding a stronger word than “quixotic” for Trump’s plan to seize Greenland has been name checked to me more than once.
Nick Schifrin @nickschifrin NEW: @potus letter to @jonasgahrstore links @NobelPrize to Greenland, reiterates threats, and is forwarded by the NSC staff to multiple European ambassadors in Washington. I obtained the text from multiple officials: Dear Ambassador: President Trump has asked that the following message, shared with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, be forwarded to your [named head of government/state] “Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America. Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a “right of ownership” anyway? There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT”
JFC.
Trump is now blaming his bullying and demands to be given Greenland on not being awarded the Nobel Prize. Why should he be nice when they're being so mean to him and not giving him the prize he insists he deserves.
Whoa. Yes. #greenland
i think, however, this is a crystal clear example that the next cold war is actually democracy vs autocracy and the battle lines run right through every single advanced democracy. there aren't really any safe harbors.
>the president has gone certifiably batshit insane and is deploying airborne brigades to U.S. cities to support his secret police while starting multiple conflicts and creating a crisis to annex the territory of an ally at the same time he’s renaming multiple government buildings after himself
We’re being led by the anti-vaxxers of the legal sphere:
People who’ve never lived without the protections of international law and domestic regulation, so they only notice the inconvenience, not the horrors prevented.
When institutions work, their benefits become invisible, until they’re gone.
Great piece
The idea of European sclerosis in the face of a supposed American Eldorado, which is claimed as justification for the campaign of deregulation currently sweeping Europe, does not hold water. It is based on three myths, which we will deconstruct one by one

I think Norwegian PM Jonas Gahr Støre gave a good New Years speech this evening.
A few excerpts here from the English version, link below:
The key thing to understand in this story is not just that Katherine is the kind of leader we want to see more of, standing up on principle, but that when you do so, you will face as much opposition from your ostensible allies as from the fascists you’re fighting. www.nytimes.com/2025/12/30/b...
Insane but true fact: making US roads as safe as Canadian, Australian, or European roads would save more lives than eliminating murder from the US.
