It only works for last letter *if* it’s possible to interpret “end” as just the last letter rather than either the first or last letter.

Sure, but wouldn’t endless in that case mean not having an end, i.e. missing both ends?

I can see “endless” could be interpreted as delete both ends or delete the final letter, but I don’t really see how it can be just delete the first letter
