W+IGS Statement on Inclusion, Equity, and Respect

In light of the recent UK Supreme Court ruling clarifying the legal definition of sex under the Equality Act 2010, W+IGS reaffirms its unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive space for scholars of all minoritised genders within German Studies. Our commitment to inclusivity means recognising the diversity of gender identities and experiences within our community and affirming the right of all individuals to self-identify and to live free from discrimination, erasure, or exclusion.

The recent UK Supreme Court ruling concerning the legal definition of “woman” exhibits a form of biological determinism, prioritising biological sex over lived gender identity, that does not align with our values and practices as an association. In recent years, we have adopted the name Women+ in German Studies (Wissenschaftler:innen in German Studies) to better reflect our association’s commitment to inclusivity, and to acknowledge that the community we serve extends beyond cisgender women to include trans, non-binary, and gender diverse scholars. We recognize that gender identity is a fundamental aspect of human dignity, and that trans women are an integral part of our academic community.

We believe that academic spaces and society at large are strengthened by recognising and valuing diversity, and we oppose any form of stereotyping or marginalization. W+IGS will continue to advocate for gender equity, challenge exclusionary practices, and ensure that our own spaces remain welcoming, affirming, and safe for all.
