I put “AI” in quotes because of course these pushers don’t distinguish between the LLMs called generative AI and true AI. It’s deliberately misleading.

NEA receives Microsoft grant to expand AI literacy and leadership | NEA NEA President: This technology will continue to fundamentally change the way we teach and learn

NEA is wrong for this and it’s harming the future of education. The president of Microsoft is claiming that “AI” is a tool for creativity and critical thinking when we keep getting data, such as from the MIT study, that shows the opposite. @neatoday.bsky.social www.nea.org/about-nea/me...

I’ve been teaching cooking club after school and this week I had to try making pupusas. This was a practice trial before teaching kids how to make them. I filled mine with roasted garlic and queso fresco.

@neatoday.bsky.social How much are you getting from these companies to push generative AI onto educators?

5 days ago 4 1 0 0

This information should be included in every statement that AFT and @rweingarten.bsky.social makes about AI. It would be interesting to know how she is personally invested in these companies too.

I wonder how much NEA is getting. 🧐 It’s so sad to see teacher unions caring more about money from the private sector than they do about students.

As a teacher and proud union member, I’m so glad to see AFT getting dragged for this. I’d love to see NEA get dragged as well for pushing AI through articles and trainings. Generative AI has negative effects on thinking skills and does not belong in education.

Thanks so much for finding this! Now I’ll have to look into how much NEA is receiving.

From AP News: "Microsoft is contributing $12.5 million to AFT over five years. OpenAI is providing $8 million in funding and $2 million in technical resources, and Anthropic has offered $500,000."

Looks like AFT is receiving $23 million from Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic to push AI onto educators via "trainings"

I don’t know if AFT is familiar with the MIT study the suggests that use of generative AI erodes critical thinking skills, which seems entirely oppositional to the mission of education, unless AFT has already had their critical thinking skills eroded by ChatGPT.

I heard someone at the front desk inside say “I was wondering who scored a Cybertruck,” lol.

Haha I doubt it but that would be very ironic.

My apologies for the very filthy bus window but I saw this in the parking lot of our field trip this past week and there’s a lot to unpack here.

Stop saying ICE needs better training. THEY ARE TRAINED–to kill with impunity. Murder is brutal and clumsy, and that's exactly what they're doing.

That sounds like a lot. I hope you’re feeling better.

Bulleted facts from that article: “ single generative AI text query consumes energy at four or five times the magnitude of a typical search engine request.
Generating a single image using AI consume the same amount of energy as charging a phone to full power.
Training one large AI model consumes nearly 5 times the lifetime emissions of the average American car.
Data centers-giant warehouses filled with endless rose of computer servers that are continuously working to complete tasks-used 4% of total US electricity in 2023 and that number is expected to jump 7 to 12% in the next three years alone.

Bulleted facts about it the impacts from the article. NEA knows the impacts. So how can its continued push of generative AI show anything but a lack of commitment to its stated beliefs about climate change and environmental justice?

It is always so very disheartening to hear teachers using generative AI to write emails, lesson plans, and come up with ideas and unfortunately it’s because there are too many people coming in to tell teachers how AI can help us with our workloads without ever mentioning the impact.

A screenshot of a feature article published by NEA Today for the January 2026 issue. The article is titled “How AI is changing the way you teach” and says “Educators use artificial intelligence to support not replaced the human connection and learning.” The accompanying picture shows a smiling young woman at a laptop.

I was very disappointed to see NEA encouraging teachers to use generative AI in their teaching practices and in the classroom, especially when paired with NEA’s affirmed belief in Climate and Environmental Justice. I just sent some feedback and I hope they will do better in the future.
