Greenland Dust Delivers Nutrients to Ice-Melting Algae - Eos Researchers scrutinized aerosols above and within the ice sheet, finding phosphorus and other mineral particles.

Aerosols carry significant amounts of phosphorus that can fuel massive algal blooms on the Greenland Ice Sheet, according to new research, underscoring the importance of tracking dust emissions to understand how the ice sheet will change in the future. ๐Ÿงช๐ŸงŠ eos.org/articles/gre...

Linking extreme light availability to cellular function in algae-dominated communities on the Greenland Ice Sheet Transcriptomic and proteomic responses of glacier ice algae to extreme changes in light availability on the Greenland Ice Sheet, linked, for example, to ox

So great to see new research on microbial adaptations to the extreme light regimes in the Arctic! 'Linking extreme light availability to cellular function in algae-dominated communities on the Greenland Ice Sheet' academic.oup.com/femsec/artic... @lianegbenning.bsky.social

Screenshot from polarportal.dk, a website that makes research on the Arctic research conducted by Danish institutions available to the public and researchers. The image shows Greenland in tan and the Greenland Ice Sheet in red and white. The red part indicates melting and covers all except about 20% in the northeast, which is roughly the area higher than 2500 m above Se level.

Below the map is a chart that compares 2025 melting to the 1981-2010 average. The average melting peaks in mid-July at about 35%. For the last few days, melting has occurred over roughly 80% of the area of Greenland, with a maximum melt area of 80.6% on 24 July 2025. This is the highest value in our dataset, which starts in 1981.

In agreement with the Cities and Volcanoes Commission and the
IAVCEI Executive Committee, the Local Organizing Committee for the 13th Cities on Volcanoes (COV13) conference, originally planned for July 2026 in Bend, Oregon (U.S.A.), has made the difficult decision to postpone the event to a future date.
Recent developments have created uncertainty around our ability to confidently and effectively host the conference in 2026 and to welcome attendees without concern.
This decision follows many months of collaboration with more than 70 local, regional, and international partners to shape an engaging and meaningful program. We recognize this news will be disappointing, but we believe it is the most responsible choice under the current circumstances, grounded in care for our colleagues and partners.
With continued support from the Cities and Volcanoes Commission and IAVCEl, we are already exploring the possibility of hosting COV in Bend in 2030 or 2032, and we remain hopeful for opportunities to gather in the future.
