photograph or a poster on cream colored paper. "Dear President Ambar,
we are writing to you on a typewriter that is over 70 years old. This is a
machine that we all know well. With it, we misspell words without the crutch of spell check or generative AI and we think intently about every phrase we pound out. As we force ourselves, for once, to slow down, we engage in a cognitive dialogue with ourselves. We do not seek perfection because we know that education is about the growing and challenging of our young minds' potential, not the chasing of institutional 'gold-star' approval. We do not believe that your so-called 'Year of AI Exploration; providing enterprise ChatGPT and Google Gemini subscriptions to every Oberlin student aligns with our college's founding principles. You claim that this year will be one of experimentation, not adoption. But even just one semester of accepted (encouraged even) chat bot use will jettison our student body down a lazy and irredeemable tunnel of intellectual destruction. We are a college grounded in learning and labor, which now risks straying from these rooted ideals. With ChatGPT at the helm, our emails, essays, and discussion posts will be generated for us, not by us. And let's not fool ourselves. This is precisely what these platforms will be used for by our busy, anxious student body. We see your vision for this year as.advancing the college's 'businessification'--an alarming trend also seen in the takeover of our beloved library cafe by a 'bookstore' with no books in stock and an app replacing customer service. In one instance, the college assumes we want efficiency at all costs through automated rather than hand pulled coffee. In the other lies the false belief that we simply desire to turn in an essay, regardless of how little we've written of it." there's more that doesn't fit in the 2000 character limit :(
OH MY HEART...the Oberlin Luddites Reject "The Year of AI Exploration"! 💚

A map showing private drains leading from residences to common shores, or sewers
Boston Town Records, BPL Special Collections
A receipt from Peter Virginia, an African American laborer, to Boston’s Board of Selectman for ‘taking twenty Load out of the North School Vault’
I’m currently obsessed by Boston’s early C19 sewage infrastructure, which relied heavily on the labor of African Americans. Here’s an 1803 map of sewers in Middle (now Hanover) St in the North End & an 1802 receipt from Peter Virginia for emptying septic tanks. This is literal History from Below! 🗃️

Table of four columns headed, respectively, "1,000,000 Years Ago," "150,000 Years Ago," "10,000 Years Ago," and "150 Years Ago." The first column contains four roughly-shaped stone tools, the second has four more finely-shaped stone tools, the third has yet more sophisticated stone and bone tools, and the fourth has the text "Introduction of Interchangeable Parts."

The verse goes
Midst the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me
And as He died to make men Holy let us die to make men free
Our God goes marching on
And, like, honestly you wanna burn down Richmond all over again when you hear it!

guy said, “Do you like Marx?”
I said, “I haven’t met him.”
Guy said, “No, no, he’s dead.”
“Wow, what happened?”
“No, no, he died long ago.”
I thought the guy Marx had just died. So then, “Why are you asking me if he died long ago?”
“No, he wrote a lot. He wrote that poor people should not be poor.”
I said, “Sounds amazing.”
I’m giving you a sense of how naïve I was. After they left, I went to the library to look for Marx. So that was my introduction to Karl Marx.
BS: The FBI.
MM: The FBI. Then, of course, I took a class on Marx. Couldn’t just get Marx out of the library. But,
good morning specifically to the FBI agent who introduced Mamdani’s dad to Marx

An image of a proposed redesign for the Massachusetts flag: it is a photo collage with a huge Dunkin Donuts at the center with the Harvard "Veritas" seal on the front of the building and a huge lobster plush doll walking out the front of it. The enormous smiling head of Governor Maura Healey rises up from behind the building, with heart-shaped sunglasses pasted over her eyes. Three bros in the lower left of the photo are raising a toast in red Solo cups, and in the lower right a (possibly drunk) young white person wearing a white T-shirt and sunglasses is waving a huge rainbow flag and wearing a rainbow boa. The word "MASSACHUSETTS" appears in the upper right in enormous pink-sprinkled letters in the Dunkin Donuts font.
The submissions for the new Massachusetts seal, flag and motto are up, and my friends, they are a *trip* www.mass.gov/doc/massachu...
