Without the appropriate pushback from kinksters, I think that this particular story would go unchecked and it would be detrimental to our community.

That said:

I came away liking the movie. If you're in a dynamic that toxic, get the fuck out. If you're not, use it as a litmus test.

Here is where my biggest critique of the movie lies. I don't think it's good to have a piece of media like this in an environment where our community is already demonized and misunderstood. It does feel like a superficial interpretation written by non-kink people.

As a Dom, seeing a some amount of myself in Ray was a gut-punch, but a healthy one. Not in his actions, but in the fears, projections, and internal mythology ("you could never hurt me" bullshit) he creates. It’s a mirror to hold up to a lot of young unhealthy and inexperienced "Doms"

I ended up viewing Colin as an unreliable narrator here. Ray represents an amalgamation of "first kink partners" the ones who are often unhealthy. Seeing Colin come out the other side as an assertive, self-advocating sub is what makes the ending beautiful, not sad.

Hot take: I actually enjoyed Pillion. While most in my group found it depressing, I saw a pitch-black comedy with a surprisingly happy ending: seeing Colin finally actualize himself. But we need to talk about the "Ray" dynamic.

The whole album is a banger! No skips. "Sever the blight" is a particular stand out for me.
