A pair of merging galaxies. The galaxy on the left has a single, large spiral arm curving out from the core and around to below it, with very visible glowing dust and gas. The right-hand galaxy has a bright core but only a bit of very faint material. A broad curtain of gas connects the two galaxies’ cores and hangs beneath them. A few small stars and galaxies are scattered around the black background.

Spitzer’s infrared image is more diffused than either Hubble or Webb. Just right of center is a bright red dot, which is the center of the spiral galaxy. It is surrounded by a reddish ring, which are the galaxy’s arms. The gap (here at top right) is bordered by two reddish pockets of dust and gas. The smaller galaxy is at top left. It’s a bright blue dot surrounded by light blue haze. Background galaxies and stars are hazy blue dots.
