One of the two teams using HST to take spectra from SN1a was called "measuring the deceleration of the expansion of the universe." They assumed, because everything attracts everything else, the expansion should slow down. They found the slowing down to have a negative number: the universe was accelerating!
One of the prime design reasons for the Hubble Space Telescope was to further the work of Edwin Hubble, to measure the expansion rate at much larger distances with much better precision.
Cepheids can only be seen so far, but SN1a, 'standard candle' stellar explosions, we see across the universe:
Hubble's original 1929 chart with distance on the X- and radial velocity on the Y-axis shows a clear linear relationship.
Hubble then found Cepheids in other spiral nebulae from which Slipher, excellent spectrographer, had measured redshifts. Hubble came to a groundbreaking conclusion: the further galaxies are, the more redshifted.
So not only was the universe much much larger than our galaxy, it was also expanding!!
A couple years later, Edwin Hubble found a Cepheid Variable star in Andromeda, M31.
Cepheids are species of giants -visible from very far!- whose brightening and dimming period is correlated to their mass, as found by Henrietta Leavitt in 1908.
M31 was so far away it couldn't be in the Milky Way.
Following a bad translation from an Italian observer who described 'canali', Lowell thought 'canals, Mars must have builders!"
He built Lowell Observatory to study Mars.
Astronomers he hired had different interests, and Mars isn't always visible. Here, Vesto Slipher saw spiral nebulae redshifted!
