Almost everything we argue about is a substitute for the thing we should be arguing about: the immense wealth & power of an oligarchic class, which captures governments, ruins lives and wrecks the living planet.
This class redirects our rage at scapegoats. To resist its lies is to resist its power.

Hmm, long time since I read it and I'm certain I've forgotten details but my lingering impression is that it was sexist pseudo-science.
I possibly never needed to be reminded of the earlobe thing 🫣

I suppose there is or people would stop producing it.
I'm sure it could be better though. Listen to on-hold music long enough and it can be very difficult to be pleasant when someone finally picks up the call which seems counter productive.

Possibly - I assumed it became almost like something to focus through.

She wasn't an artist I'd have selected when she was big - about as interesting as elevator music.
Now though ...

Yep. Exactly.
I don't even know where he first heard her - and it bore no relationship to the music he normally listened to.

When he was learning to drive, my late millennial son decided, for reasons he never shared, that he had to have Enya playing in the car.
Her music is forever tainted.

I know I miss out on easy access to worthwhile things - great and varied food, cultures, events etc but I'm unlikely to take more than rare advantage even if I could - I'm just not social enough.

And to me, that's the beauty of the distinction between cities and regional areas - they should meet different preferences and meet them well.

I love Sydney. I understand the attraction- at least right in the city centre and through all the city parks.
I'm delighted to visit but have no interest in staying.

Except that some of us, in some of those places, live here precisely because it's unlike Sydney.

A substantial and tragic problem we are failing to solve.

Gray whales are starving. Some have died off Oregon Coast Gray whales aren't getting enough to eat to survive their long migration toward Alaska.

Sorry to post this for those who abhor seeing this kind of news about wildlife. But while we are collectively agonizing over the state of our nation, the state of our planet is probably the more urgent news.

They're such gorgeous little birds.

And I bet the crested pigeons just looked right through the wood duck and took precisely no notice.

Mine does, and has since at least 2007. It's a fantastic service.

Won’t somebody save these hundreds of turtles condemned to death? | First Dog on the Moon There is a whole dam full of water right there but the turtles can’t have it

Letting one person's 'concerns' prevent a life-saving release of environmental water for wildlife, including turtles, is truly fucked up, and those responsible should all be ashamed.

Press cutting Lancashire Telegraph, 20 April 2008: Shepherd's pie recipe rumpus. Subhead: Petrol bomb threat in tomato topping row. By ANDREW BELLARD A dispute over the contents of a shepherd's pie proved to be a recipe for brotherly disharmony. Blackburn magistrates heard that John Garvin thought that the pie his brother Michael made should have been topped with tomatoes but Michael disagreed. The upshot was that John, who was hit over the head with a shovel, reacted by threatening to petrol bomb his brother's flat. And he ended up spending a night in custody to allow tempers to cool. John Garvin, 47, of Montague Street, admitted a breach of the peace and was bound over in £100 to keep the peace for 12 months. Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said the brothers lived in separate flats next to each other. On the day of the culinary dispute they had been drinking together since 7am. "The argument started because there were no tomatoes on the shepherds pie that Michael made for tea and John thought this was wrong," said Miss Allan. John called his brother an offensive name and then said he was going to petrol bomb his flat. "Michael was concerned by this threat because on a previous occasion John had started a fire in his own flat," said Miss Allan. Liz Parker, defending, said her client did not accept making a remark about petrol bombing his brother's flat. "He does say that his brother hit him over the head with a shovel and it is very clear there was a lot of trouble over nothing," she added. (The article has a pullout quote which says “It is very clear there was a lot of trouble over nothing” - LIZ PARKER in large letters) District Judge Peter Ward, who imposed the bind over, asked in court: "You can make shepherd's pie without tomatoes can't you?" But 'legal' opinion at Blackburn magistrates, where the issue became quite a talking point, was divided. A female defence solicitor said it should be made with lamb and topped with sliced tomatoes and that a pie made with b…

I want the names.
Of every mane who visited the online ‘rape academy’.
I want their next of kin. I want their place of work.
I want their headshots on every billboard, I want them in the town square.
Right where we can see them.
I want them fearful. I want them second guessing every woman they know.
I want them looking over their shoulders. Harried. Hurried. Nervous and afraid. I want their palms sweaty. Their breathing shallow. I want them to taste the fear that we have lived with for all out lives. I want them to wonder if their next step will be their last. Then, I’ll gently tell them that it’s not all women and we’ll see if that appeases them. If they sleep easier. If they can relax. Knowing that not all women want to drag a knife across their throat for what they’ve done. Only some.

Australia's biggest AI factory planned for remote WA A huge artificial intelligence data centre capable of training models like ChatGPT is planned for WA's remote north at a cost of billons of dollars.

I can't think of a more perfect encapsulation of the damage being caused by AI speculation than the idea of constructing a massive data centre in the Kimberleys.

Because, of course, child/slave/convict labour, pollution and corruption have never been identified as a problem in any other supply chain.
They're known and/or potential issues in so many industries and have their roots in the drive to maximise profit.

Only US Votes Against Women’s Rights Document At UN Commission - Health Policy Watch President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock told the opening of CSW that the backlash against women's rights "feels as though we are forced to

For the first time in decades, consensus broke at the UN Commission on the Status of Women. The United States cast the lone “no” vote on a document aimed at improving justice systems for women and girls worldwide. Misogyny is the official policy of the US under Trump.
