Today we arrived in Reykjavík fleeing before Erin. This expedition has left me with a lot of unforgettable sceneries, nice people to interact with and a lot of samples to work with back home.

Thank you to Captain and Crew of the Maria S. Merian for such a smooth passage through little known waters.

@arcticstationucph.bsky.social as we finish our stay in the arctic station, it is time to take stock. Great to get the samples that we have, even with the difficult conditions. In addition, a big thank you for the staff‘s support and warmth. GreenHAB returns to Disko Bay in August

Weltrekord?

The rhizarian testate amoeba that I shared yesterday makes its shell out of intricate, self-constructed glass scales. Other testate amoebozoans in the same environment make their shells out of debris (left) or food (right). These are interesting examples of convergence! #protistsonsky #protistaday

This is amazing, thank you for sharing! You can even identify the diatoms on the right amoeba!

Phages gain the upper hand in the metabolic arms race for NAD+ Bacteria often defend against phage infection by deploying NADase effectors to degrade cellular NAD+, thereby halting both bacterial growth and phage replication. In a recent article in Nature, Osterman et al. identify phage-encoded counterdefense pathways that reconstitute NAD+ during infection, enabling phages to combat multiple unrelated antiphage systems.

Nathan Bullen and Aaron Whiteley wrote a nice summary of our Osterman et al 2024 study

It is so cool that this paper is the sum of other ecological studies from our group. Great to see the data use this way! doi.org/10.1093/giga...

My own first post here. Just a bit of ecology of diatoms in temporary rivers, no with excursion into the Arctic phytoplankton.
