Orthodox politicians love to flaunt the numbers of how little reform synagogues there are in the country compared to orthodox as if it's a sign that "the public has spoken", when they know full well that they have their entire fist on the scales and that they bend over backward to restrict growth

Reform and conservative congregations are systematically denied access to the resources and infrastructures that are offered to orthodox communities. It can take years and even decades to get a city manager's approval to recognize a single synagogue as a house of worship. >>

(note 1: in conservative I specifically mean conservative judaism, which if you ask me is quite the misnomer but nvm; note 2: reform and conservative together make around 10% of the Jewish population in Israel - way less than the corresponding share in the US - partly due to the following)

The state does not recognize marriages officiated by either reform or conservative rabbis. They are allowed to practice but the ministry of interior won't recognize it (only indirectly if you get a marriage license from a foreign government). Like, my niece is legally a bastard.

So there's the stuff you're aware of with the traditions of Jews with middle-eastern heritage being marginalized/erased/looked down upon. But even within the denominations that have European roots the picks and chooses >>
