At a jaunty angle on a creased dark green leather settee sits the LP sleeve of ‘The Explosive Side Of Sarah Vaughan’. On the right side of the sleeve is a headshot of Sassy singing, reproduced in a sort of pointillist style, with chunky lines of yellow, orange, and orange-red radiating from one eyes over the whole sleeve in a kind of sunburst. The only exception is where the title is rendered to fit this circular explosion, in a gorgeous lettering reminiscent of Saul Bass’s Vertigo font. Just gorgeous.
FUCK, but this is a cool album, and not one I play enough. I’m a huge Sassy fan anyway, but everything about this - her performance, song choices, arrangements (by Benny Carter, also conducting), that glorious sleeve - is just right.
