Diablo/Hellfire had a minimum of 1x1 grid slots used for stuff like potions and gold piles, up to a 2x3 for armour sets, with helms being 2x2 and weapons being 1x2, 1x3 or 2x3.
Diablo 2 was the same except Gold was stored in a wallet.
Diablo 3 uses 1x1 for jewelry and gems, 1x2 for everything else.

Some of the best games I'm played with inventory management based on limited space involve a Inventory Grid, namely the Diablo series (at least Diablo through Diablo 3) - you have a limited number of slots and different items take up different shapes in those slots.
