The @ecpr.bsky.social Joint Sessions are always an intellectual highlight. This year I co-organised the workshop “Global Governance in Times of Disruption” with @yoramhaftel.bsky.social. Incredibly rewarding. Global governance is under pressure, but research in the field has never been stronger.

A fantastic week in Brussels leading a study trip with our postgraduate IR students. Great to see them engaging directly with EU policymakers and gaining first-hand insights into decision-making, alongside thought-provoking perspectives from the FES. Many thanks to all our speakers for their time.
And here are the data as a bar chart pooled across the 10 years. So, Italy, looks to be doing better than Germany and France. But one year (2022-23) contributed one third (5) of all slots for Italy.
New article in @ripejournal.bsky.social w/ @sebhaug.bsky.social and Han Cheng on China's new Global Development Initiative. We contend that the GDI is a form of institutional layering that serves as a component of China's counter-hegemonic strategy. www.tandfonline.com/doi/epdf/10....

Habermas' letzte Veroeffentlichung in der SZ, basierend auf einem Vortrag zur Frage: „Kann sich die EU dem autoritären Sog der USA noch entziehen?"
"The prime minister indicated that the conflict had refocused the government on “ambitious” new ties with Europe, economically and in defence, and said how Britain emerged from the crisis “would define us for a generation”."

Global Environmental Politics celebrates 25 years of impactful scholarship with a special anniversary issue, "Continuity and Change in Global Environmental Politics." We're pleased to make this landmark issue available to read for free through May: direct.mit.edu/glep/issue @gepjournal.bsky.social
The death of Jürgen Habermas made me revisit my only foray into normative political theory. Our argument: normative progress in global governance comes from increasingly encompassing justifications -- a thought very much in the spirit of Habermasian philosophy.

Is global governance fit for crisis?
In our blog for @ecprtheloop.bsky.social, Ken Abbott and I argue that the resilience of global governance depends on combining robust institutions with flexible arrangements, leadership, and the capacity to learn during crises.

🌐 @benjaminfaude.bsky.social of @ecprsgir.bsky.social & Kenneth W Abbott examine how #GlobalGovernance performs under pressure 🚨, arguing that resilience depends on combining robust institutions with flexible arrangements, effective leadership + the capacity to adapt during crises.

Last lecture of SocSci H1F: Explanation in the Social Sciences, the class that @laurennross.bsky.social and I co-teach at UCI. The class brings together the philosophy of science on explanation with case studies from International Relations, illustrating how explanation matters for social science. 🧵

Sustainable finance standards are often accused of being highly fragmented.
We built an original dataset of 111 Sustainable Finance Governance Initiatives (SFGIs), covering 2000-2020, to see for ourselves. The result? It's complicated.

Pedro Sánchez responded to Trump’s threat to cut off all trade with Spain over his government’s refusal to facilitate the US’s attacks against Iran, comparing the growing conflict in the Middle East to playing “Russian roulette with the destiny of millions”.

On Iran, Merz offers a set of unsubstantiated claims. What he says about international law is inconsistent.
Pedro Sanchez is showing real leadership here.

It's well known that autocratic systems of governance can move rapidly, either toward beneficial outcomes or toward disaster, without the mediating effects of public debate or the need to justify actions. If Trump’s domestic agenda progresses, its consequences for world politics can't be overstated.
Reputation.
