Once I was at a sushi place with my husband and a man came in and asked the guys at the sushi bar for a little take-away container of wasabi because his wife had a head cold and he thought it might help clear her sinuses. They gave it to him 🥹

IIRC, during Covid lockdown, Théo Rochette declined to attend Worlds because he didn't want to fly during Covid, quarantine on both ends, and risk the remainder of his QMJHL season. As a result, he was persona non grata with the Swiss National team for a few seasons. Fischer has some fucking nerve.

Apparently I was grimacing during my mammogram and the tech was like, That doesn't hurt, I'm only applying half the allowable pressure. Ma'am. Just cuz it could have hurt MORE doesn't mean it didn't hurt a bit. It's boob-smooshing. It's unpleasant. Allow me my grimace.

This is a screenshot of the audio book version of On the Calculation of Volume, vol. iv, by Solvej Balle. Beneath the picture of the cover (which is dusty pink with two coffee cups on it) is a large yellow button that says "Listen Now"

"What was the human condition after the plague? Exhausted by deaths and sorrows and the morbid excesses of fear and hate, it ought to have shown some profound effects, but no radical change was immediately visible. The persistence of the normal is strong." - Barbara Tuchman, A Distant Mirror

When I was in grad school I was leaving a meeting w/ my advisor when the department chair came in to talk to him about something that started with "Ever notice we talk about teaching *loads* and research *opportunities*?" (the department was in the middle of a job search). I still think about that

Listen, about a year ago I re-read Barbara Tuchman's A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century and every hundred pages I was like Yeah, we're living this right now.

After I finish a book, it's always tough deciding what to start next but I just finished a book and I have to pick the next book to read and it might be The Last Book Ever and man. How do you pick *that* book?
