12. Like art, music, philosophy, and literature, science is literally part of humanity's heritage.
My colleagues and I have had the amazing opportunity to be part of something vastly larger than ourselves, with meaning that transcends any state, regime, or generation.
They can't take that away.
A white woman (me) with glasses and long brown hair wears a "Science Not Silence" hoodie while speaking from behind a lectern with a "Seattle Stand Up for Science" banner on it. Behind her is a wall with a large, multi-colored abstract mural on it as well as another "Stand Up for Science" banner. Behind the mural and wall loom the Space Needle against a bright blue sky.
A woman in a dark hoodie and dark jeans is shown from behind speaking to a large crowd on a lawn holding protest signs supporting science. Behind the crowd are trees and the tall white arches of the U.S. Science Pavilion from the 1962 World's Fair.
A view of a large crowd on a lawn holding protest signs under a hazy blue sky with trees and buildings in the distance.
Thanks for showing up to #StandUpForScience, Seattle!
Huge thanks to the grad students and early career scientists @sufsseattle.bsky.social and @standupforscience.bsky.social who organized the events here and around the world today. π

Join us THIS FRIDAY, March 7th, 12-4pm, in Lansing to #StandUpForScience!
We are citizens united in demanding that policymakers defend science, protect research funding, and ensure evidence-based decision-making for the benefit of all. Weβre standing up for science because science is for EVERYONE.
Giving ppl the false perception of hope - "as far as DEI and transgender are not mentioned in my grant, I should be OK" - keeps them quiet.
Whoever took on a leadership position, this is their time to shine. Otherwise you are just another administrator.
I am not going to call this a Bluetorial, because I do not want to sully that term (which, at least I, find joyful).
Letβs call it a Orwellial.
For sure!!

The people in power intend to completely annihilate scientific infrastructure, capacity, & research in the US. No institution will be spared if its mission is to advance science.
Everyone is already a target, whether you speak up or not. So, institutions, consider speaking up.
@holdenthorp.bsky.social do something!
