The Arbiter - Group Management for Permissioned Spaces and Beyond The permissioned data proposal has the concept of membership, but leaves it to the app to orchestrate it. The arbiter is our idea for a general-purpose, interoperable ATProto group membership service.

At @roomy.space we've been cooking up the design for the next, ATProto-native iteration of Roomy, and that includes private data on protocol!

The first component that we're working on is a group membership service that we're calling the "arbiter".

Here's full overview of the design so far!

Thought that Nine Inch Noize album might be new material but sadly it's just the Coachella live set. That's a shame.

The Garden | Paul Stephenson | Offprint The future of the internet isn’t bigger platforms, it’s smaller gardens.

So, Bluesky's been bollocksed all morning? Kind of reminds me of the days of the #failwhale. Ah, the good old days. Speaking of...

One built on smaller, interoperable communities on decentralized platforms, where we connect to others based on what we share rather than what the algorithm drives, where good behaviour is rewarded, the price of admission is empathy rather than outrage, and where what you create belongs to you.

"there's no ethical way to consume media in this day and age" is just soulless capitulation to the worst impulses of capitalism. of course there are ethical ways to enjoy things: go to a concert, go see a live show, buy CDs. etc. I mean come on.

Wow, really becomes clear how shitty they are as a company now that they seem to have removed any obvious way to close your account. nothing in the knowledge base, account settings, faq's

I Will Never Respect A Website If you like this piece and want to support my independent reporting and analysis, why not subscribe to my premium newsletter? It’s $70 a year, or $7 a month, and in return you get a weekly newsletter...

Today's free newsletter is about the dangers of treating AI as being more than it is - a website or app built on expensive technology, with dubious reliability and inherently unsustainable economics.

The rhetoric from AI labs has to change.

I don't know why this is so hard for some people to grasp. If we extend our use of fossil gas, rather than going all-out for grid batteries, heat pumps and induction hobs, we extend our dependence on *foreign* sources of gas, regardless of whether we also use the UK's last remaining reserves. 🧵

Richard Tice tax row is 'minor administrative error', party claims A property company owned by the Reform UK deputy leader failed to pay £91,000 in tax on dividends, according to the Sunday Times.

Odd how the minor administrative errors always seem to produce the same results.

With the news from Hungary it feels like there’s hope in the air in Eastern Europe for the first time in decades.
If I could quote the immortal words of that poignant Scorpions song, “Here I am, rock you like a hurricane. Are you ready, baby?”
