And this is a really obscure opera; no company in the US has performed it in the past 20 years. So it's not like some tenor just has this role in their back pocket or something.

Then before the matinee today, we get word that HE'S too sick to sing (it's a very demanding role) and a friend of the Board president who was in the audience Friday spent all day yesterday (14-16 hours) learning it to sing today! Concert performance, so with scores, but still! Just nutso.

Original hired lead (in from Mexico City) was under the weather, sang Act 1 on Friday, then handed it off to his understudy, the MN Opera resident artist tenor who I've done several shows with. He nailed it in Acts 2 and 3 and we were all very proud.

We only had two performances of Puccini's Edgar and ended up having three different tenors sing the lead role onstage at the Ordway. This was a short but wild run. #mnopera #chorus
