Our new review is out in Earth-Science Reviews!

Here, we look at how salinity influences microbial ecology and inhibits healthy nutrient & carbon cycling in these important ecosystems.

Integrated 'multi-omic' evidence like this gives further support for recommendations to improve freshwater flushing of the Coorong to drive the improvement of nutrient pollution (alongside reducing salinity)

These flows drove succession of microbes toward "healthier" nutrient, carbon and nitrogen cycling in the system.

We also found evidence of many (potentially toxic) compounds, including nylon polymers and carbamates. This warrants a further look in.

We used 16S-seq of eDNA, and metabolomics (LC-MS) to monitor sediment microbiomes throughout 2022.

We initially aimed to look at seasonal variations but ended up capturing the onset of the largest flood in the Murray-Darling Basin since the '50s.

The 2022 floods triggered shifts in the Coorong’s microbiome—similar to gut bacteria on new diets—revealing why freshwater flows are vital to wetland health.

Understanding sediment nutrient cycling in a hypersaline coastal lagoon using hydrogel-based passive sampling techniques The Coorong, South Australia, is a Ramsar-listed hypersaline coastal lagoon system of significant ecological and cultural importance. Despite facing e…

Our new paper on sediment nutrient cycling in the Coorong (using passive hydrogel [DGT/DET] samplers). Great work, Leslie & team!
