After finishing Oklahoma yesterday, today I visited my 254th and final county for Texas... and celebrated with a jar of 254 regular M&Ms!

Maybe I'll do all the reubens when I retire!

I am on a quest to go birding in every county in the United States. Today I ticked my 77th and final county for Oklahoma, and celebrated with a jar of 77 peanut M&Ms.
Yesterday I was notified that an NEH grant I'm on has been canceled by the Trump Administration. The point of the grant was to develop humanities courses that integrate data science. Guess that was too woke for somebody. This administration simply does not know what it is doing.
Out here at the protest in front of NIST in Boulder, Colorado. This town is home to a big number of this nation's climate scientists among other experts. We're feeling the impact and we're not taking it lying down.
What bunting is that?

Personal milestone: Finally caught up on uploading my 21-year backlog of bird sound recordings to the eBird archive. Support scientific archives 👍 #birds #birding
The true story of an endangered crane who had to learn to love her own species. #Birds in #kidlit -- two of my favorite things.

Proud to present the efforts of our data advocacy team funded by a grant from the University of Colorado system. Join us on Zoom for this event today.
Okay, pals.
Time for action this month.
We're going to do that by funding classrooms that are specifically seeking out Black history books. These classrooms are those that are in historically underfunded communities.
These asks are from teachers whose students benefit directly.
This episode, featuring appearances from @thebirdist.bsky.social, @drew-weber.com, and @npieplow.bsky.social, is riveting. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/d...

This.
Yep that's me! Glad you liked it!
Royal Tern, no? Unless not from North America
Also the most difficult Mexican one 😂
That species continues to elude me...
I love mine. Being able to shoot silently is huge for bird photography.
Oy. Birds can throw rocks now?

Love the bouncy bird!
After two field guides to bird sounds, I decided to change gears and write fiction. Turns out novels are harder than I thought! But several years and manuscripts later, with the help of my writing partner Katheryn, @sarahnfisk.bsky.social, and a great critique group, here we are! #writing #kidlit
You found us! 🐧💙
Just like these happy Gentoo penguin chicks, we’ve found a fresh new home here on Bluesky! ✨
Every bird deserves a healthy habitat—and for us, this new space feels like the perfect fit for sharing stories, sparking conversations, and working together for conservation.

Magnificent bird.
Hi Katie! This is a House Finch.
A male Great-tailed Grackle bathing in shallow water
Great-tailed Grackles sound like car alarms. Big flocks shriek all night in grocery store parking lots. One of my all-time top ten favorite birds. #birds #addbirder
Two Slate pieces make the same point: we need community, but we don't want to do the work. I feel that. (slate.com/life/2024/11...)
