The Symbolism of Shiromuku The Shiromuku is the most formal and traditional attire for a bride in a Shinto wedding ceremony. The name translates literally to "pure white," where shiro means white and muku signifies purity or flawlessness. Historically, the all-white ensemble dates back to the era of the samurai and carries a profound symbolic weight: the white represents the bride's "death" to her own family and her rebirth into the groom's family. As you noted, it signifies that she is a "blank canvas," ready to be "dyed" by the customs, traditions, and colors of her new household. The ensemble is composed of several layers of white silk, starting with the kakeshita (the inner kimono) and topped by the heavy, padded uchikake (the formal overgarment). While the entire outfit appears monochromatic at a distance, it is often richly textured with woven or embroidered auspicious symbols such as cranes (tsuru), pine trees (matsu), or cherry blossoms (sakura), which represent longevity and new beginnings. Accessories are equally vital to the silhouette, including the wataboshi (a large white hood) or the tsuno-kakushi (a decorative headpiece designed to "hide the horns" of jealousy), and a small sensu (folding fan) tucked into the obi.

Wedding uchikake, kimono and accessories - called shiromuku - for traditional Shinto weddings in Japan. All is white - “white” can be dyed with any color, so shiromuku means that brides are ready to be dyed with color of groom.
