Our old font had some overly-similar letterforms (capital I and lower-case l 😵💫). Typographic clarity is absolutely essential when filling out documents related to name change, so we hope this new one is the best mix of style and accessibility! 💜
Namesake has a new font: a custom version of the famous Atkinson Hyperlegible!

Happy Trans Day of Visibility from us at Namesake! 💜🏳️⚧️
We've been a little quiet, but only because we're hard at work expanding into more states. (More on that soon 🤞)
Check out our coverage map at namesake.fyi. If you see a state you think you can help with, or know someone who can, email / DM us!

Kansas is one of 5 states to prohibit trans people from changing gender markers on ID, and first to pass a law that retroactively cancels licenses.
For Kansans: If you need help covering the costs of a new ID, transportation to the DMV, etc., both the LGBTQ Foundation of Kansas and Equality El Dorado have set up mutual aid funds to help:

Matthew Neumann, founder and executive directory of the LGBTQ Foundation of Kansas, holds up his 'M'-marked driver's license — which he refuses to give up despite a new anti-trans law declaring it invalid. (Matthew Neumann)
If you don't see the problem with forcing this man to carry an F for female on his driver's license then I don't know what to tell you
This story, from @natezuke.bsky.social, is absolutely wild. A trans woman who never changed her gender marker was issued a letter invalidating her license. At the DMV they cut up her license, which had an "M" marker.

once again, i am begging everyone to turn some of their energy towards abolishing the concept of legal gender. there is no reason gender has to be on driver's licenses and passports, and for most of history, it wasn't!
MAKE AN EMERGENCY DONATION to Trans Continental Pipeline right now.
They are a Colorado based org that helps trans people relocate there and they are overwhelmed with requests. CO borders KS, and TCP has the infrastructure to help get people out.
GO DONATE.

As of tonight, licenses of trans people across Kansas are being invalidated en masse, enabling the overnight criminalization of an entire group of people for going about our lives. It’s often said you never know when you’re living through history, so let me assure you: that’s what’s happening now.

The name change and gender marker change process is already full of burdens—we hope that this change will make the process easier for trans people in the U.S. to find the information and support they need.
Webpage on the Namesake website with large text saying “What is the reason you’re changing your name?” There is a text box with the label “Reason for name change” and a banner that says: What do I write? Provide a basic reason —no need to go into detail. Examples: • "I want a name which aligns with my gender identity." • "This is the name everyone knows me by." • "This is my preferred name and I wish to obtain proper documentation." • "I am transgender."
We’ve also redesigned our forms to ask one question per page, making it easier to focus and reducing the chance of error.
Last year, we launched a web app to assist trans people with legal name changes. Today, we’re removing the login wall and registration requirements and making everything publicly accessible.
Trans youth deserve:

The Department of Health and Human Services has proposed a new set of rules attempting to ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth nationwide.
Take action and tell HHS: No bans on gender-affirming care.

a bit belated, but: happy to share that Namesake has partnered with Superbloom for fiscal sponsorship!
Giving people ownership over their legal name isn’t just about cutting red tape, it’s about helping trans people to safely travel, work, and access social services.

When I asked other trans journalists about how they’d transition in this political moment, most of the advice boiled down to: Do whatever makes you feel safe and happy. You don’t need to tell every person you’ve ever quoted in an article. You can also not tell a soul. Different approaches work for different journalists, each with their own tradeoffs depending on your personality and how frequently you need to talk with sources.
