Listening to bands like Nails and Xibalba opened my eyes to a lot of their influences though, and that led me down a strictly old school death metal diet around the same time the more modern OSDM and "cavernous" scenes were popping up.

I should also say that for a long time the only metal I fucked with was black metal. When I was a teenager pretty much every contemporary band in my realm of influence was techdeath or deathcore or metalcore or some other stuff I didn't really like (which was my fault for being ignorant).
