this is a really recurring thing with Nintendo's newer stuff, because for a long time they've given you stars for beating levels, or like, four elemental stones to collect or whatever, but that doesn't gel super well with diluted open world content
ppl will talk abt intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation to do stuff and I certainly don't tjink you need rewards to do anything in a game but littering the open world with challenges that don't get you anything other than maybe a sticker??? Is really boring and immediately killed my mood for doing them

Peak peak peak peak peak peak peak peak peak peak. Phenomenal incredible series. It's amazing how they got it nearly perfect on the N64 and barely had to tweak it at all going forward. Like, the N64 entries are the best feeling N64 games I've ever played, and the Gamecube entry still feels awesome.
