Congrats to every enterprise using zoom who just got exposed to BIPA class actions.
(People, I get paid for these hot takes.)
Mare Gluesenkamp Perez's platform is killing sea lions and the Fourth Amendment.

Update on where things stand on FISA: this deal is a win. We got the House to back down from an 18 month extension, buying us time to negotiate on real reforms. I'll be fighting like hell for reforms that put your privacy first, and will have more to share soon.
BREAKING: 150+ journalists including @maddow.bsky.social @ellenwapo.bsky.social @jamestgriffiths.com @doctorow.pluralistic.net @taylorlorenz.bsky.social @kattenbarge.bsky.social are thanking @archive.org for services to journalism.

A tweet from Representative Thomas Massie that reads: I just viewed 2 Top Secret FISA docs. 1) FISA Court opinion that raises serious concerns about FBI implementation of FISA 702. 2) letter by Senator Wyden describing a secret government interpretation of FISA law. The Constitution requires I vote No on FISA 702 reauthorization.
I sent a classified letter to House and Senate colleagues about a secret interpretation of surveillance law that every American should be concerned about.
Representative Massie is right. The Constitution requires EVERY member to vote against a clean reauthorization.
These tools aren’t just biased by demographics—even if they were accurate, they’d be biased by deployment:

In today's Connecticut Post, Demand Progress Action & @fightforthefuture.org placed an ad asking why Dem Rep. Jim Himes is doing Trump & Stephen Miller's bidding by trying to get Democrats to support renewing FISA with no privacy reforms.
One of the things I noticed when studying AI is that it's potentially one of the most democratized techs in a long time. There is no moat. There's open source. You can run it locally. It's hard to lock down with IP protections because it relies on fair use to exist.
People yelled at me a few weeks ago when I suggested locally run open models were getting to be pretty powerful. But... it's true.
The Atmosphere is a rethinking of the Internet, with social connections that you control, built in. It allows you to do more with others, while maintaining more control over your own data and experiences.
Can you die from constantly interacting with people who are confidently wrong about something you’re an expert on?
Asking out of fear for my own life
Think of the Internet without the cyber libertarian takes from people that think we're still trending towards a cyber utopia because their experience is great.
I'd gladly take the hit for the good of society.
Just think of the world we would live in if Matt Yglesias, Ezra Klein, Matt Stoller and Joe Rogan had to keep their mouth shut and let other people talk. Think of the Internet without all the paternalistic I have a polisci degree so I know better than your lived experience or body of work BS.
I'm proposing a bill that bans straight white men that either make over 100k or have inherited over 100k from expressing opinions on the Internet. I think this will go much further in protecting kids and our democracy than any bill proposed so far.
I'm honestly so sick of these popcorn meme bloggers, podcasters and posters so hopped up on wanna see something happen juice that they don't care who gets hurt as long as they get to see something happen. But to make everyone happy I have a bill proposal.
I guess we're just waiting around to see if this demented psychopath kills everyone: defector.com/i-guess-were...
Here's the number for the congressional switchboard. Please call your reps and senators. This man needs to be removed from office now.

There are so many people that contextualize the Trump admin as something we can just rebuild from. But there will be no recovering from this if Trump actually goes through with his threats.
New: Florida's wildlife police are giving ICE access to Flock from thousands of cameras around the country & performed dozens of lookups for immigration enforcement per month. Shows ICE is still accessing and also shows that access often comes from unexpected places:

Turns out covering up for pedophiles isn't a winning strategy. See you at Nuremberg 2.0
I wish this is how I learned the news.
Hehehehehe
📣Calling all journalists who think what's happening with the @archive.org getting blocked is garbage, or for those who just love the Internet Archive, DM us because we're doing a thing!
I got a "Florida Man" themed Cryptic Killers puzzle for some escapism only to find out the prime suspect is Matt Lane.
And what's funny is that this is the second time this has happened to me.
How can Jay call herself an innovation officer if she isn't patenting the tracking of moss mentions?
At the beginning of Trump's second term, many in the odd coalition of antitrust populists still had hope that aggressive enforcement would continue, albeit with changes. At the antitrust bar's annual convening in DC last week, that hope seemed deflated www.theverge.com/policy/90522...
black graphic with white font that reads 'fasicsts and bigots want to erase LGBTQ+ people from public life- this includes the internet! They're doing this through attempts to repeal Section 230, pass KOSA and make online id checks mandatory.
On this #TransDayofVisibility we're witnessing the early to middle stages of a genocidal process against Trans people in the United States. At the end of this thread we're sharing concrete steps you can take to do something about it.
