I'm no Timothy Williamson, or even a bona fide Metaphysician (or metaphysicist, idk whatever makes you feel good), but you should read Aime Thomasson's book (Rethinking Metaphysics) and decide for yourself whether she is guilty of misunderstanding what metaphysics is about. #philsky

Close… but people are fed up with both of the parties. It’s basically a costume change between sets.

Second time to attend @iaseai.bsky.social Presented my thoughts on blaming AI.
This time I had one of my own students accepted—Timothy Zhang! It was super cool to have a student of mine attending an AI ethics conference.

The conference overall was great. #aisaftey #philtech

Please share. The International Association for Computing and Philosophy is one of the best communities to engage with if you are doing any philosophy (epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, etc.) related to computational technologies.

Computer Simulations in Science (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)

🚨 Our Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on Computer Simulations in Science is now live. It was a lot of work but I’m proud of this substantial update. I hope it helps those in #philsci interested in the philosophical implications of computational methods.

Although this was strongly written from the #philsci perspective, I hope it’ll be useful for #philtech, #sts, or #philsky in general. The ubiquity of simulations in natural/social science, medicine, policy/politics, should make them of at least some interest to anyone doing 21st century philosophy.

Execution by Lethal Autonomous Mechanism: How Anti-Capital Punishment Arguments Might Lead to Automated Executions—and Why Such Automation Must be Prevented - The Journal of Ethics In this paper, we examine the potential integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into capital punishment through lethal autonomous mechanisms (LAMs), an extension of developments in lethal autonomo...

What if the arguments used to oppose capital punishment lead us toward AI executions? I, together with @reneeasirbu.bsky.social, & @floridi.bsky.social explore this possibility & why we must prevent it. A Texas murder case went cold. Then college students found a suspect As part of a new and remarkable partnership, detectives gave a cold case file to students in a criminology class at the University of Texas at Arlington.

It looks like some students at UTA (my university) solved a 30+ year murder cold case! The police had given up long time ago. #crimepodcast

Exactly!! That tells me that they are thinking about it as a possible prompt for LLMs.
On the other hand, during my less pessimistic days I wonder if the lexicon is evolving because of all the LLMs and AI talk these days.

I assigned one paper and one exam this semester. The students I suspected were using LLMs for short writing assignments were extremely curious and pushy about getting a rubric. Or whether they will get a prompt for the paper assignment.
Almost every student panicked b4 the exam week.

The paradox of providing students with precise rubrics for writing assignments like a traditional paper is that the rubric becomes a perfect prompt for LLMs. But if you don't give a detailed rubric, they can claim they weren't sure what to do or not do. #philtech #philsky

I'm honored to receive this, but I certainly did not expect it during my first semester at UTA. It is a student-nominated recognition for faculty who have had a significant and meaningful impact. #philsky

🚨 CfP.

We’re particularly interested in #philosophy perspectives that interrogate conventional assumptions on the challenges, limitations, or promises of the possibility of friendships, care, parenting, mentorship, romance, etc., involving #AI.

It took a while for philosophers of mind to get into the new AI game. Regrettably, they seem to be playing the PR game with outdated terms like “consciousness”. Given the popular appeal of this strategy, I foresee years of unbearable and retrograde debate for philosophy of AI.
