Historically, it was initially cultivated on the Banda Islands by the Bandanese people. In 1621, the Dutch East India Company performed a hostile takeover to get a monopoly on the nutmeg market. The Dutch would lose control to the British, who transplanted nutmeg trees elsewhere.
Nutmeg has several culinary uses, but is primarily cultivated for its use as a spice. Obviously the seed itself is ground into a powder, but what is less well known is that the seed has an outer coating called an aril, which can be ground into mace. (1/2)
