can we consider what neku’s character growth is? it’s expanding his world by opening it up to others. he helps people he wouldn’t have before, he listens to their problems and makes them feel seen and heard, he learns to trust and rely on people.

trust becomes one of his key values

NOW to talk about the noncanon-actually-canon alternate universe Another Day, we see neku lost a dear friend and blamed himself for it.

if—like many do—we apply it to canon, it seems he started to reject people because of it, despite his care for others. that just led to isolation and loneliness

(after rhyme dies)(quoting from memory) “this is just like that time… what time?”

neku gets his memories back and we never hear about this again. he clams the fuck up. every heart-to-heart with another character doesn’t include neku ever sharing his experience. truly, he lives in the moment.

not including AD (bc applying that to canon neku is generally agreed on but i consider it dubious), we know his admiration of CAT (including his philosophy) and him visiting the mural. the only time see him mention his past is when he has zero memory.

he is ultimately a character who is meant for the player to project onto, and despite his distinct personality the way the game achieves this is through saying very little about his past and showing none of it

he’ll talk his feelings, what he wants to do, who he wants to be… but not in past tense

neku sakuraba spends an entire game learning how to connect with people through empathy and compassion without ever saying a thing about himself somehow. fucking fascinating
