A design things I still struggle with and constantly check is asking the question "Is this feature compelling for the player or is this fun for the designer?" It's really easy to get into the weeds and be clever about designing something but the player never engages with it. Playtest is the answer!

In a few conversations, I've run into people throwing out "how is procedurally-generated game content any different from AI-generated stuff??"
I have an answer:
Designing Procedural generation algorithms requires an extremely advanced and well-honed understanding of the content and WHY it works.
