windows performance analyzer is a fantastic tool. i usually don't expect such high polish on a developer-oriented tool, but the team has certainly knocked it out of the park. cc @us.graphics :)

Would be cool to go full indie with no external dependencies except power, DNS and ISP. But Cloudflare is so nice. AWS S3 obviously is GOAT but I think i can figure out how to self-host S3-compatible object storage. These servers have a lot of Kioxia/Dell SSDs with ZFS.

With all these outages, it feels good to self-host our own servers. usgraphics.com runs on this.

1U Dell R360 8 Core E-2488, 128GB RAM
4U DIY 64 Core EPYC 9554, 192GB RAM

Colo cost: $83/month, /30 IP, 1Gb, 32TB bw/m.

Tbf, we're still heavily dependent on Cloudflare and AWS S3 (us-west-1).

Yet another thing we'll never see again in any respectable volume, that ship has sailed, it's just there for us to appreciate from distance.

Obviously the example below is a scan (which adds additional sharpening/softness), but I hope it conveys what I am trying to say. Next time you pick up a 40 year old flimsy catalog paper, notice the texture of the type. It's lovely.

Modern mass-produced offset printed catalogs just aren't the same, may be because the resolution itself has gone up from what I presume used to be 100-150 lpi in the 80s.

Edge contrast gradient is almost the same even though the glyphs have a "rounded-off" look, i.e. the shape of the glyph itself has changed.

5 months ago 0 0 1 0

The sharp edges of the glyphs aren't softened by absorption of the ink (because the paper is gloss coated), but rather smeared on coated substrate as a function of the platen pressure and applying the ink that's held in recessed engraved cells.

The resulting softness of the resolution is unique to this type of 1980s era printing and aesthetically very different than the softness we get from inkbleed on cheap copy paper.

Something about these old printed materials, typically catalogs and mass printed manuals from the 80s, that's... warm and fuzzy. Literally. These were most likely printed on cheap glossy coated paper using Rotogravure printing (similar to offset or flexographic printing).

May be I should try a proper brand of resin ribbons. Zebra makes official ribbons, Made in USA by Iimak-Amcor in NY. Problem is that I gotta buy a whole case ($500 or more). They're of the last ribbon manufacturers in North America!

Close up, the labeling is wrong, it should say "Kimdura® PolyPro". It's just a standard "Chemical Resistant" polypropelene substate, expensive and not as durable as PVF/PVC.

The PVF TT label has survived (red & yellow), but the Kimdura® PolyPro with resin ink (bottom left in white) is starting to wear out. Non-objective 90 day test on my personal laptop.

No :( it has been going on for a while.

Only Kitty terminal has this problem from our perspective.
Only Berkeley Mono has this problem from their perspective.

So wtf is going on lol...

Oblique and Italics are the same, only difference being the flourishes of italics. But in terms of the technical space, slant, etc. requirements, it is the same.

Not sure how to resolve the kitty terminal issue :( Such a weird thing and I don't blame kitty folks either.

Not much to say. This sparking water is addicting. Congratulations to all involved in making this sparking water possible and attainable at a reasonable price.

Screenshot of RustRover using a dark purply color scheme and showing a listing of Rust source code using a typeface called Berkeley Mono, with a few minor customizations I made via the web app from which I bought the font.

TX-02 Berkeley Mono™ Typeface A love letter to the golden era of computing.

Bought the Berkeley mono font for the terminal and Cursor.

Pleasantly surprised by how much more enjoyable those are now 🤗

Ligatures make code more scannable and readable, too.

Would recommend.
