So, OpenAI, whose entire business model relies on some overhyped dudebros using vast amounts of stolen data and stolen labour, is releasing a specialised GPT for the life sciences. And naming it, apparently without any sense of irony or self-awareness. Rosalind.

Want to support #WomeninSTEM? Don’t hold back an invite for something bc they’re pregnant/ just had a baby/ have a small child. People always say they’ll invite “later” but later never comes- let me lean on my support network and figure it out instead! 🔭🧪

This took me a while to realise, and it has made my life so much better: Rather than fighting to get a seat at the table, choose the tables yoh actually want a seat at.

I was top of my class in high school, an all conference and all state athlete, I had straight As in chemical engineering my first semester of college at 17.

Nobody ever asked "what about Evelyn's potential?" when I reported Title IX violations, harassment, sexual violence, and abuse over the years.

The boos were just what you heard because they were the loudest. But I guarantee there was more than one woman in the room who was glad that you said exactly what you said and exactly how you said it.

A couple weeks ago, Nicholas Keung at the Toronto Star reported on how generative AI is being used to assess immigration applications in Canada...and how it's led to refusals because of stuff the AI tool added in, that humans (clearly) failed to check.

Seriously, the number of times I’ve heard men say a version of “Oh, the best ideas are hatched on a napkin over a couple of beers.” Yeah. Good for you, dude.

Meanwhile, a bunch of us from work went to a bar once, and seeing it had a pole-dancing pole, my then-boss suggested I give it a try.

Same way that our male counterparts don’t usually have to think twice about going for after-work drinks with male
colleagues and bosses, giving them additional chances to network.

This is why these forms of sexual harassment and abuse at scale work to reinforce men’s dominance. If the woman’s “best” option is to quit, then this pattern of behavior can and IS used to keep women out of certain industries and positions of power and spheres of influence.

Refusal to Review I wrote the below email, when invited to review a paper that was partially processed by ChatGPT. As I imagine the email could be useful inspiration for others, I decided to make it available. Feel …

Why every woman can see herself in the story of a German celebrity couple’s split | Fatma Aydemir Many will recognise their own experiences of digital abuse in Collien Fernandes’s allegations – technology offers perpetrators both tools and cover, says Guardian Europe columnist Fatma Aydemir

Dear Guardian, “a celebrity couple’s split” is not the story.

The story is a woman’s decade-long digital abuse and virtual rape at the hands of her husband, involving a large number of her acquaintances and colleagues.

Loads of chat and even discourse about so-called AI literacy, but I don't think most realise you need to teach things from quite a few angles and zoomed out.

If people want to just know how the models work, that's not always possible without a much wider base anyway...

But also, the term “hallucination” suggests that it is just an honest mistake. “Oh, oops, it seems like my AI tool hallucinated, nothing I can do.” Whereas not attributing prior work to its proper sources is plagiarism. I don’t care what took you used. That’s scientific misconduct. [3/3]

Hallucinating means perceiving things that don’t really exist. An LLM cannot do that because the difference between “really exists” and “doesn’t really exist” is meaningless to it. It doesn’t even lie, it just has no concept of truth. It just says words. [2/3]

The term “hallucination” is problematic because it both over- and underestimates the issue. [1/3]

A New Wharton Study on AI Warns of a Growing Problem: Cognitive Surrender Casual users should pay special attention

'Cognitive offloading is strategic, not unlike using a calculator (...)
Cognitive surrender, in contrast, is when you stop constructing the answer yourself. The AI’s output becomes your output; there’s nothing to check or override.'
