The Fens have always been a battleground between human ingenuity and nature. Today, the question is: do we defend, retreat or prevaricate?
It's why I wrote #FloodWatersDown – to bring perspective & help us imagine potential consequences of the #climatecrisis.

Anyone who thought today's phone-in on BBC Radio 5 Live @bbc5live.bsky.social on #AI disconcerting will find #TheSentientOnes by @authorbnugent.bsky.social of immense interest. It's a scary scenario of what happens when AI really does take over and humans lose control. Doesn't bear thinking about!
It only came out last week but delighted to see my book is already heading far and wide.
This copy, on a tour of the Norwegian fjords, is probably the furthest from home so far.
Thank you to Ann for the photo of your holiday read!

Just started reading Flood Waters Down by Clive A. Simpson — author, award‑winning journalist, editor, and friend.
It’s gripping from page one: gritty scenes, believable characters, and a story that feels uncomfortably prophetic. An amazing read.
Thank you, Brendan.
Creative arrangement of Flood Waters Down paperbacks for UK launch day (9 April) along with a vase of tulips and branded coffee mug. The novel is also available worldwide as an ebook.
It’s release day!

Totally agree with you @carbonbrief.org - this article by
@priyabharadia.bsky.social is an essential read.
I've written my own comment piece, based around the article & Lincolnshire's flooding problem, which is a theme of my upcoming novel #FloodWatersDown

The narrative of the original article in The Guardian that prompted my blog is certainly interesting, especially in the light of the forthcoming (9 April) publication of Flood Waters Down which is available for pre-order now at bookshops and online.
"Boston, nestled at the northern end of the [Lincolnshire] Fens, is on the frontline of the UK’s flooding crisis, which experts say could lead to some towns being abandoned as climate breakdown makes many areas uninsurable."

Indie publisher Cliftop Publishing will release the near-future eco-thriller Flood Waters Down by Sleaford-based journalist Clive A Simpson on 9 April 2026. Set in the drowned fenlands of South Lincolnshire, the novel portrays a Britain reshaped by rising seas, systemic breakdown and the gradual expansion of AI governance. Combining ecological realism with a distinctly Ballardian atmosphere, it adds a regional British perspective to the expanding climate fiction market. Simpson, an international journalist specialising in space, climate and environmental reporting, drew inspiration from the 2013 east coast storm surge, which brought parts of Lincolnshire close to catastrophic flooding. “At its heart, this is a story about how people respond when government and the systems built to protect them begin to fail,” he says. Evocative, prophetic and fiercely human, Flood Waters Down is a powerful exploration of survival, resistance and moral reckoning in a world undone by climate collapse.
Took a proof copy of my new novel #FloodWatersDown for an outing to the London Book Fair yesterday. A great day and lots of good conversations. It's due out on 9 April.

In the March issue of “Odyssey,” we continue with our reflections on the future role that robots and AI may play in human society and in space exploration. How long will it be before the voice of HAL 9000 can be heard asking the astronauts of the future to check a faulty AE35 unit? #Odyssey
