Researchers test a two-way brain interface with wearable robotic legs that could one day restore walking and sensation after paralysis Related News USC researchers pioneer new brain imaging technique through clear “window” in patient’s skull May 29, 2024 New “smart bandages” hold potential for revolutionizing the treatment of chronic...

USC/UCI researchers have built a two-way brain-computer interface for paraplegic spinal cord injury patients, allowing them to mentally control a robotic exoskeleton AND feel their steps with 92% accuracy and no training. The barrier to walking after paralysis may be partially solved. 🧠🦿 #BCI #spine

Climate Coverage Plunges, Though Crisis More Dire Than Ever The scientific consensus that we need to phase out fossil fuels fast has not changed, but coverage about climate change in US news outlets has plunged.

Where’s the news? 2025: hottest decade on record, CO₂ at 14-million-year high. Climate change becoming climate crisis. When the loudest silence is about the greatest danger, speaking up becomes the most urgent act of citizenship and news reporting.

Noninvasive imaging could replace finger pricks for people with diabetes A noninvasive method for measuring blood glucose levels, developed at MIT, could save diabetes patients from having to prick their fingers several times a day. The device uses Raman spectroscopy to me...

Are you diabetic or know a diabetic? MIT has developed a shoebox-sized Raman-based noninvasive glucose sensor that matches CGM for accuracy. It may eventually shrink into smartwatches, for a possible future of painless, wrist-based glucose monitoring.

Trump’s FY2027 budget slashes civilian science, confirming a MAGA‑driven war on U.S. research, gutting NSF, NIH, NASA, CDC and more while favoring defense‑aligned AI/quantum, and accelerating America’s loss of global scientific leadership to China.

Deep-fried food banned in new plans for school dinners Schools are being told to cut down on sugary desserts, and provide more vegetables and whole grains.

The UK has banned deep-fried food from school menus and limited sweets. The number of children who receive free meals has also been increased. This will save eligible families up to £450 (US $600) annually and tackle child obesity, though higher standards may mean more expense and smaller portions.

As result of the USAID cuts, 95 million people stand to lose access to basic healthcare, and 23 million children risk losing access to education. A June 2025 study estimated at least 14 million preventable deaths by 2030, including 4.5 million children under five.

Most spider bites are painless. Not so a black widow bite, which can be more painful than a wasp sting. Living in Arizona, I have been stung by bark scorpions 2-3 times. It is not painless, though a lot less painful than I had expected.

Spider bite hospitalisations in England, 100 admissions in 2025, have doubled in a decade, likely driven by booming noble false widow populations; serious cases remain rare and basic precautions, such as not handling spiders directly, keep risk very low.

True. Human history is full of positives and negatives. On balance in the current era it has mostly been positive, though in history there have been long negative periods such as the Spanish Inquisition, colonization of the Americas, Africa, and Asia, and thousands of years of slavery.

Are Seed Oils *Actually* Bad For You? A Registered Dietitian Explains | Canadian Living What does the science actually say about seed oils—are they really toxic and bad for our health?

Promotion of beef tallow/lard over seed oils is not consensus-driven science. Both are natural, processed culinary ingredients, neither ultraprocessed. Tallow and lard raise LDL and cardiovascular risk. Fried food is not recommended regardless of the oil used, whether from animal or plant sources.

A temporal aberration, then. You are correct that societies can be influenced by government, by social groups such as gangs, or by individuals to do atrocious things to other people. In WW2 the Japanese government used propaganda to promote an ultra-nationalist ideology. Similar to Germany.

Radon levels in the United States and location of women in the study (yellow dots). https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2847635

Radon causes lung cancer. A new study on radon and ovarian cancer postmenopausal women has found that high radon exposure may also cause ovarian cancer. One in four homes have elevated radon levels (>4 pCi/L). Radon is common, testable & fixable. Test your home.

Indeed. Picturesque, with a lot of history to see, a very efficient transportation system, and very polite and kind people. WW2 was a strange aberration for the Japanese culture which I have never understood.
