“The pope is weak on nuclear weapons” on the other hand is beyond parody
That was Lance Stephenson, but Brooks has had plenty of memorable run-ins with James too
He even wrote an actual graduate textbook on QFT+strings, which seems to be pretty good?
new org chart for DOE Science programs
Existing org chart
New: DOE is reorganizing the Office of Science, per email. Notably, it appears to be combining high energy physics and nuclear physics. Unclear if this keeps the funding pools separate. (I'll ask)
Apologies for the low-res image; that's what they sent. On the right is the current org chart.
I'm constantly trying (/failing) to get this point across.
If you're a trained expert in a field, then it may be worthwhile to question the scientific consensus of your peers.
If you're not, the scientific consensus is absolutely the best you can do and it's arbitrary foolishness to disregard it.
Shonny Miller, whoever you are, please for the love of god, stop trying to use my email address. It is not yours. It has never been yours. I am not interested in your Sam's Club statements or your pest inspection reports.
Agreed, but to be fair, my 2 year old was also pretty mad about it when we read it the first time
Playing Guess Who (animal edition) with the toddler:
3yo: I’m going to choose the duck.
Mom: You’re not supposed to say that out loud
3yo: *whispering* I’m going to choose the duck.
..
Grandma: Is your animal green?
3yo: No, it’s white. It’s the duck.
Apologies to the copy editors employed by APS who have to add "boson" after "Higgs" about 60 times in our paper for no reason other than the Physical Review being silly
European particle physics strategy update summary 😅
Computer Modern ftw
I thought the exact same thing before reading your comment and now I’m kind of disappointed 😂
There’s so much to unpack in “the way sports does”, and it’s all gross
The alliteration in this post is 👌
I know this is an absurd proposition, but… is there a really good reason why CS shouldn’t just have its own preprint server? It’s a humongous portion of the arXiv usage now, brings a lot of the traffic that takes the site down, and seems like there should be means of independently supporting it…
But only for reviews and “position papers”, and only in CS. I think for most of us it’s good news that arXiv is taking proactive steps to keep the site working.
Sad to see C.N. Yang passed away, a legendary physicist who despite his achievements was also one of the most underrated physicists of the 20th century and could have won multiple Nobel prizes not just one. He put Stony Brook University on the map and left an indelible impact on the YITP ⚛️🧪
If you see this post a bridge.

Any idea the reason for this change? Was it forecasted at all? It’s a surprise for me…
On a Mac it’s just option+shift+hyphen (or just option+hyphen for an en-dash rather than em-dash)
Who gave the talk? There have been several claims of this nature in the past few years (and long before that, I’m sure), which all seem loosely related, but I don’t think much of the community is convinced by any of them
The number of awards was cut way down (in half?) last cycle, but there were still awards given in Biology: www.research.gov/grfp/Awardee...
Forgoing the chance to do a comment on a comment on a comment 😕
This is such a profoundly mean thing to say (not disagreeing with you)
Footnote 1 is brutal.
Yeah, we touched down at 6:05 CT. Just got off the plane a few minutes ago.
Can confirm lol.
