Extra special thanks to Paul McCusker, his fantastic students and @atu-ie.bsky.social, because without their collaboration, this fantastic experience wouldn't have happened. We look forward to the return trip in March!

Many thanks to David Gilliland and the wider Brook Hall team for hosting such an engaging and insightful visit. Special thanks to Emer Gallagher for organising the event and Hafiz Mudassir Rehman for helping with the preparations and facilitation of the seminar.
UU already knows how wonderful our own students are, but a special mention must also go to the ATU students, who were inquisitive, polite and an absolute pleasure to host throughout the day!! They were fantastic representatives for @atu-ie.bsky.social .
The day included a lecture on the circular economy, a field trip to Brook Hall Estate & Gardens, and a systems thinking design workshop. It gave students a fantastic opportunity to see how organisations put sustainability into practice and experience circular economy business models.
A total of 20 students from across both institutions took part, representing a range of programmes, including Ulster University’s MSc Sustainable Management and ATU’s MSc in Strategy, Enterprise and Innovation.

Last Friday, we were delighted to bring together students from Ulster University @ulsteruni.bsky.social and Atlantic Technological University @atu-ie.bsky.social as part of the UU-ATU Cross-Border Mobility Initiative, supported by the North West Tertiary Education Cluster @mynwtec.bsky.social.
Scientists are naturally conservative with predictions. It's unfortunately the case that climate change is generally happening much faster than those conservative predictions. All the more reason for urgency from governments.

Do you see what is happening before our very eyes?
This is the playbook, folks.
If you're not paying attention now and doing something about it, then you're going to have to sit down the rest of your life because democracy is being taken away.
Do not be quiet in this moment.
Many companies are using this tech already, the improvements made in the last couple of years have been unprecedented. As AI is now contributing to its own development, I don't see this momentum slowing. Combine with things like vertical farming and regen agriculture we can make positive changes.
I need to make clear that I'm not an expert. We have people in the partnership that are better qualified to answer this question. However, I think advances in AI and computer vision could help spot early signs of food going off, cut waste, and make supply chains more transparent and efficient.

NEW RECORD: The UK just recorded its hottest summer on record, per the @metoffice.gov.uk
Four heatwaves, persistently warm nights, and widespread water shortfalls pushed the season into unprecedented territory.
Human-driven climate change made this summer about 70x more likely.
🧵 Farage is whipping up anger against the ECHR with false claims (see thread).
As The Bear brilliantly writes: “The ECHR [is] the foundation that protects you from your own government.”
That's why leaving the ECHR would be a Really Bad Idea.

There’s a persistent myth that new solar farms don’t really help tackle climate change because panels are “made with coal” and “never pay back” their carbon debt.
This is simply false.
- UN: solar ~8x cleaner than gas, ~19x than coal per kWh
- panels repay CO2 in 4 months; save 57x over life
Deforestation has killed half a million people in past 20 years, study finds.
Our fate is inseparable from that of the natural world.
