Introduction to Species Counterpoint – Open Music Theory Open Music Theory is a natively-online open educational resource intended to serve as the primary text and workbook for undergraduate music theory curricula.

One such corpus = one I made a while ago (c.2019) for pedagogical purposes, including as part of the Open Music Theory textbook (OMT).

ZGMTH - Studie zur Harmonielehre an Hochschulen und Universitäten im deutschsprachigen Raum und im internationalen Vergleich

📣 new paper 📣
Parallel or variant?

🇩🇪 🇦🇹🇨🇭🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🇺🇸

As an Englishman teaching in Germany I was amazed at just how different the German– and English– speaking music theory lexicons (still) are in our ostensibly globalised age.

Thanks all!

Bravo on the important paper @tuomaseerola.bsky.social and team!

@michelle-phillips.bsky.social , hello from a TISMIR rep (current EB, incoming EiC) in listening mode! Let’s share notes sometime!

Some shared issues, some differences. Lots of open code/data at least.

And singing along is frowned upon for some reason! Even in the good bits!

Sounds cool!

If composed out echo effects are in scope I have a couple of attack-sustain examples in my orchestration chapters for Open Music Theory.

Britten, Sibelius, Debussy if I remember right. If that’s of interest I’ll dig up the URL for you.

In addition, key to transparency is effective attribution and that’s vv difficult to achieve.

Eg a mash up = many samples = countless contributors, poorly documented in metadata.

We’ve seen cases before where well-intentioned policy ends up adversely affecting only the well-intentioned.

Doubly good of you to come to my department seminar in that case! Thanks!

… do I owe you some email triage now?

🚨 Unimportant Terminology Question no.265326 🚨

Membership on here is soaring!

Great time to shore up the terminology. (Or not!)

If on bird 🐦 themed platforms posts were called “tweets” 🐥, does what are they here 🦋?

… “bolts ⚡️from the blue”?

Thanks for the encouragement!

I’ve had one in the “book inbox“ waiting patiently behind too many others for too long.

It’s time!

And maybe time too for a KCL book club (only fiction allowed)

+1. I was intrigued to hear how the dynamic between @ednewtonrex.bsky.social as keynote and certain companies in the room would play out. Didn’t disappoint.

Thanks! So shall we keep the league tables but insist on plotting them with error bars? Or is that just an undifferentiated smudge of overlaps?

I think the first record I ever owned was one of yours!

… Flaubert would probably not think much of east anglia … not a lot of hills here either and certainly not a lot to boast about in the Neufchâtel cheese department 🧀
